How to use the Print on Demand Profit Calculator
Enter your retail price and any shipping you charge the buyer.
Add the print provider costs: base product cost and the shipping they bill you.
Set the fees for your marketplace or store: percentage fees, fixed fee per order and listing fee. Use a preset as a starting point and check your platform's current fees.
Add ad cost per sale and a target margin, then press Calculate profit.
Read the profit and break-even price, and use the table to test higher or lower prices before you list the product.
Print on demand profit formula
Revenue = retail price + shipping charged to the buyer
Fees = revenue × (platform % + payment %) + fixed fee per order + listing fee
Product cost = base product cost + fulfillment shipping + other costs
Profit per sale = revenue − fees − product cost − ad cost per sale
Price for target margin m = (product cost + fixed fees + ads) ÷ (1 − percentage fees − m) − shipping charged
Worked example: a $29.99 T-shirt with free shipping, a $12.50 base cost, $4.75 fulfillment shipping, 6.5% + 3% fees, a $0.25 fixed fee, a $0.20 listing fee and $3.00 in ads. Fees are 29.99 × 9.5% + 0.45 = $3.30. Profit = 29.99 − 3.30 − 17.25 − 3.00 = $6.44, a 21.5% margin. The break-even price is (17.25 + 0.45 + 3.00) ÷ 0.905 = $22.87.

Each extra dollar of price adds about $0.905 of profit here, because 9.5% of it goes to fees. That is why small price increases change POD margins so much.
Tips to improve POD margins
Price from the break-even point up, not from competitors down. Know your floor before you discount.
Watch the ad cost per sale. On paid traffic it is often the largest cost after the base product. If it exceeds your profit before ads, the product loses money on every ad-driven order.
Compare providers: base cost and shipping vary between print providers and regions, and a closer facility can cut shipping and delivery time.
Raise order value with matching designs or bundles, because fixed fees and shipping are spread over more revenue.
Fees change: the presets use example rates (such as 6.5% transaction, 3% + $0.25 payment and $0.20 listing, common on a large handmade marketplace in 2025). Always confirm current fees on your own platform and enter them.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate print on demand profit?
Profit per sale = (retail price + shipping charged) − percentage fees − fixed fees − base product cost − fulfillment shipping − ad cost per sale − other costs. For a $29.99 shirt with free shipping, a $12.50 base, $4.75 shipping, 9.5% fees plus $0.45 fixed and $3 ads, profit is about $6.44, a 21.5% margin.
What is a good profit margin for print on demand?
Many sellers aim for roughly 20% to 40% net margin after fees, and higher before advertising. Because base costs are fixed by the provider, margin mainly comes from pricing and from keeping ad cost per sale under control. Check the break-even price first, then price well above it.
How do I find my break-even price?
Add every fixed cost per sale (base product, fulfillment shipping, fixed fees, listing fee, ads, other) and divide by (1 − percentage fees). Then subtract any shipping you charge. The calculator does this for you and shows it as the break-even retail price.
Are marketplace fees charged on shipping too?
On many marketplaces the transaction and payment fees apply to the total the buyer pays, including shipping. This calculator applies percentage fees to price + shipping charged. If your platform charges only on the item price, enter shipping charged as 0 and add it to the price instead.
How much can I spend on ads per sale?
The most you can spend on ads and still break even is your profit before ads. The calculator shows it as Max ad spend per sale, together with the break-even ROAS (revenue ÷ profit before ads). Spending less than that per order leaves you a profit.
Should I offer free shipping on print on demand products?
Free shipping often converts better, but the cost does not disappear: you pay the fulfillment shipping out of the retail price. Compare the profit with shipping charged versus shipping built into a higher price using the table and the presets.
Does this include taxes or refunds?
No. Sales tax or VAT collected from buyers is passed to the government and is not your revenue, so leave it out. Refunds, misprints and reprints can be added as an average amount in Other cost per sale.
