Fit, fill or stretch: what happens to the picture
When the new size has a different shape from your video, something has to give. Fit scales the video down by the factor min(new width ÷ old width, new height ÷ old height), so nothing is lost, and fills the leftover strips. The blurred option paints a zoomed, blurred copy of the same frame behind the video, which is the look used by most social apps. Fill uses max(…) instead, so the video covers the whole frame and the overflow is cropped; the crop position sliders decide which part stays visible (0 = left/top edge, 50 = centre, 100 = right/bottom edge). Stretch scales width and height separately, which distorts round objects and faces.
Example: a 1920 × 1080 landscape clip fitted into 1080 × 1920 is scaled by 1080 ÷ 1920 = 0.5625 to 1080 × 608, leaving bars of 656 pixels above and below. Filled instead, it is scaled by 1920 ÷ 1080 = 1.78 to 3413 × 1920 and only the middle 1080 pixels of width remain.
Tips for a sharp result
Avoid making a video larger than the original: upscaling a 720p clip to 1080p makes the file bigger but can't add detail.
Width and height are rounded to even numbers, which video encoders require.
For vertical platforms, keep text and faces away from the bottom fifth and the right edge, where captions and buttons appear.
Frequently asked questions
What size should a video be for TikTok, Reels and Shorts?
All three use a vertical 9:16 frame. 1080 × 1920 pixels is the standard size and what the 9:16 preset produces. 720 × 1280 is also accepted but looks softer on modern phones.
How do I turn a horizontal video into a vertical one without cutting anything off?
Choose the 9:16 preset and keep Fit (add bars) selected. The whole landscape picture is placed in the middle and the empty space above and below is filled with a blurred, zoomed copy of the same video, which looks much better than black bars.
What is the difference between Fit, Fill and Stretch?
Fit scales the video so all of it is visible and pads the leftover space. Fill scales it until the frame is completely covered and crops whatever sticks out. Stretch forces the picture to the new width and height, which distorts it if the shape changes.
What is the best size for an Instagram feed video?
Instagram feed posts can be 1:1 square (1080 × 1080) or 4:5 portrait (1080 × 1350). The 4:5 size takes up more of the screen in the feed, so it usually gets more attention.
Can I make a video smaller to send by email or chat?
Yes. Use the Half size or Small 480p preset and choose Smaller file quality. Fewer pixels and a lower bitrate can reduce the file size a lot. For a precise target size try the Video Compressor.
Why does resizing take as long as the video?
Your browser re-encodes the video in real time using the built-in MediaRecorder, so the clip plays once in the background while each frame is resized. Keep the tab visible until it finishes.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The video is read and resized by your own browser. Nothing is sent to a server and there is no watermark.
