How the Black Friday date is set

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving in the United States. Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November, so Black Friday always falls between 23 and 29 November. Cyber Monday follows three days later, and many retailers now run deals for the whole week or even all of November.

The name is often explained as the day stores go from "in the red" to "in the black" (profitable), although it was first used by police in Philadelphia in the 1960s to describe the heavy crowds and traffic.

How the countdown is worked out

The target is midnight at the start of Black Friday in your device's time zone. The time left is the difference between that moment and now, split into whole days (86,400 seconds each), then hours, minutes and seconds. Because it uses real elapsed time, a daylight saving change before the day is handled automatically. Sleeps are the calendar days from today to the day itself, and weekdays to go count Monday to Friday dates from tomorrow up to the day before. The day after the holiday, the countdown switches to next year.
