Why the Fourth of July is celebrated
On 4 July 1776 the Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, announcing that the thirteen American colonies regarded themselves as independent of Great Britain. The vote for independence itself took place on 2 July, but the 4th, the date printed on the Declaration, became the day of celebration.
Independence Day became a federal holiday in 1870 and a paid holiday for federal employees in 1941. When 4 July falls on a Saturday, the federal holiday is observed on Friday 3 July; when it falls on a Sunday, it is observed on Monday 5 July.

How the countdown is worked out
The target is midnight at the start of Independence Day in your device's time zone. The time left is the difference between that moment and now, split into whole days (86,400 seconds each), then hours, minutes and seconds. Because it uses real elapsed time, a daylight saving change before the day is handled automatically. Sleeps are the calendar days from today to the day itself, and weekdays to go count Monday to Friday dates from tomorrow up to the day before. The day after the holiday, the countdown switches to next year.
