Why Mother's Day falls on different dates

In the United States, Mother's Day was campaigned for by Anna Jarvis and made a national observance by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914, on the second Sunday of May. Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, Japan and many other countries use the same date.

The UK and Ireland celebrate Mothering Sunday, which comes from a much older church tradition: it is the fourth Sunday of Lent, exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday, so it moves between early March and early April. Several other countries have their own dates, for example Mexico (10 May) and many Arab countries (21 March).

How the countdown is worked out

The target is midnight at the start of Mother's Day in your device's time zone. The time left is the difference between that moment and now, split into whole days (86,400 seconds each), then hours, minutes and seconds. Because it uses real elapsed time, a daylight saving change before the day is handled automatically. Sleeps are the calendar days from today to the day itself, and weekdays to go count Monday to Friday dates from tomorrow up to the day before. The day after the holiday, the countdown switches to next year.

When is Mother's Day in 2027?

In the US and many other countries Mother's Day 2027 is Sunday 9 May. In the UK and Ireland, Mothering Sunday 2027 is 7 March.

Why is Mother's Day on a different date in the UK?

The UK keeps the older tradition of Mothering Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Lent, which is three weeks before Easter. Because Easter moves every year, so does Mothering Sunday.

How is the US Mother's Day date worked out?

It is always the second Sunday of May, so it falls between 8 and 14 May.
