Tips for a reliable online alarm
- Keep the tab open. You can use other tabs and apps, but closing this page stops the alarm.
- Turn on Keep screen awake and plug in your laptop so it doesn't go to sleep overnight.
- Test the sound first. Press Preview to check that the volume is loud enough to wake you.
- Allow notifications if your browser asks, so you also get a pop-up when the alarm goes off.
- Use the fade-in option for a gentler wake-up: the sound starts quietly and gets louder over about 25 seconds.
How much sleep do you need?
Most adults do best with 7 to 9 hours of sleep. A simple way to pick your alarm time is to count back from when you need to get up: to wake at 7:00 AM after 8 hours of sleep, aim to be asleep by 11:00 PM. Sleep runs in cycles of roughly 90 minutes, so many people feel fresher waking at the end of a cycle, for example after 6, 7.5 or 9 hours.
Frequently asked questions
How do I set an alarm for 7am?
Press the 7:00 AM quick-set button (or type 07:00 in the time box), choose a sound and press Set alarm. You can also open this page with ?t=07:00 at the end of the address to have 7:00 filled in for you.
Will the alarm ring if I close the tab?
No. The online alarm clock runs inside the web page, so the tab must stay open. You can switch to other tabs or windows, but don't close this one and don't let the device go to sleep.
Will the alarm work if my computer goes to sleep?
Not if the device fully sleeps. Turn on Keep screen awake, which uses your browser's Wake Lock feature to stop the screen from turning off while the page is visible, and keep laptops plugged in.
Why can't I hear the alarm?
Check that your device volume isn't muted and that the alarm volume slider is up. Browsers only allow sound after you interact with the page, so press Preview once or set the alarm with a click to unlock audio.
Can I set more than one alarm?
Yes. Add as many alarms as you like, each with its own time, label, sound and repeat days. They're saved in your browser so they're still there when you come back.
Does the alarm clock work on a phone?
Yes, in a modern mobile browser. Keep the page open in the foreground and the screen awake, because phones pause background tabs to save battery. For important alarms, also use your phone's built-in alarm app.
