Webcam Virtual Background
Blur your room or swap it for a picture or a plain color, live, using AI person segmentation that runs on your own device. Fine-tune the edges, then record a video clip with sound or take a snapshot. Your camera image is never uploaded.

How to use the Webcam Virtual Background
- Press Start camera and allow camera (and microphone, if you want sound in clips).
- Choose an effect: Blur, Image, Color or Off. The AI model loads the first time you use an effect.
- Fine-tune the edges: more smoothing softens the outline, higher tightness trims leftover background, and flicker reduction steadies the cutout.
- Press Record clip to record video with the new background, and Stop recording when done; or press Take snapshot for a PNG.
- Download your clips and snapshots from the list below the preview.
Which background effect should you use?
| Effect | Best for | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Blur | Video messages, interviews, casual recordings | Looks the most natural; small cutout errors are hard to see |
| Image | Branded intros, themed or fun recordings | Use a calm, slightly out-of-focus picture so you stand out; edges are more visible |
| Color | Clean product or talking-head shots | Pick green or blue to key the clip again later in a video editor |
| Off | Checking framing and lighting | Shows the plain camera; no AI processing |
How the edge settings work
The AI model outputs a soft mask: a value between 0 (background) and 1 (person) for each point of a small grid. This tool turns that mask into the final cutout in three steps:
- Flicker reduction blends each new mask with the previous one (a moving average), which steadies the outline when you sit still. High values can leave a short trail when you move quickly.
- Cutout tightness moves the threshold of the soft mask. At 50% a point needs about even odds to count as you; higher values remove more uncertain pixels around the edge.
- Edge smoothing applies a small box blur to the mask, so the transition from you to the background is soft instead of jagged.
Tips for a clean result
- Face a window or lamp; a backlit window behind you makes the cutout harder.
- Keep your whole head and shoulders in the frame, with some space above your head.
- Avoid clothes in the same color as the wall behind you.
- Chairs, headsets and objects you hold may be treated as background; hold items close to your body.
Frequently asked questions
How does the webcam virtual background work?
Each camera frame is passed to an AI person segmentation model (MediaPipe selfie segmentation) that estimates, for every pixel, how likely it is to belong to a person. That mask is smoothed, scaled to the video size and used to cut you out and place you over a blurred copy of the frame, an image or a color. Everything runs in your browser on your own device.
Is my camera video sent to a server?
No. The AI model is downloaded once from a public code CDN and then runs locally. Camera frames, recordings and snapshots stay in your browser and are only saved when you press Download.
Can I use this virtual background in Zoom, Teams or Google Meet?
Not directly: a web page cannot act as a camera device for other apps. Those apps have their own background blur built in. Use this tool to record clips or snapshots with a virtual background, for example for video messages, intros or social posts, and upload the files wherever you need them.
How do I get cleaner edges around my hair?
Light your face from the front, sit about an arm's length from the camera and use a background that contrasts with your hair and clothes. Then raise Cutout tightness if background shows around you, lower it if your hair or shoulders are cut off, and add a little Edge smoothing. The Quality model gives better edges than Fast.
Why is the video choppy?
Segmentation runs on every frame, which takes processing power. Choose the Fast model or 480p, close other heavy tabs, and plug in a laptop charger. The fps counter in the corner shows how many frames per second are processed.
What format are the recordings?
Clips are recorded with your browser's MediaRecorder: MP4 in Safari and recent Chrome and Edge, WebM in Firefox and older Chrome. Snapshots are PNG images at the camera's resolution (up to 1280 pixels wide).
Does it work without an internet connection?
The camera works offline, but the AI model has to be downloaded the first time you choose Blur, Image or Color. If it cannot be downloaded, the page tells you and shows the plain camera image.
