Coin flip probability

A fair coin has two equally likely outcomes, so every flip is a 50% chance of heads and a 50% chance of tails. The coin has no memory: after five heads in a row, the next flip is still exactly 50/50.

Heads 10 times in a row1/1,024 ≈ 0.098%

Ways to use a coin toss

  • Quick decisions: pizza or burgers, left or right, this movie or that one.
  • Games and sports: decide who goes first, picks a side or kicks off.
  • Best of three: flip three times and whoever wins two calls it.
  • Classroom experiments: flip 10 coins many times and compare the results with the probabilities above.

Tip: if you feel disappointed by the result of a coin toss, that is a good sign you actually wanted the other option.

Frequently asked questions

Is this coin flip really random?

Yes. Every result comes from your browser's cryptographically secure random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues), so heads and tails each have exactly a 50% chance and past flips don't affect the next one.

What are the odds of heads or tails?

Each flip is 50/50. Over a few flips you will often see uneven results or streaks; over hundreds of flips the percentages get closer to 50%.

What are the odds of getting heads 3 times in a row?

The chance of a specific result three times in a row is ½ × ½ × ½ = 1/8, or 12.5%. For 5 in a row it is 1/32 (about 3.1%) and for 10 in a row 1/1024 (about 0.1%).

Can I flip more than one coin?

Yes. Pick 2 to 10 coins and they all flip together. The result shows how many landed on heads and how many on tails, and every coin is added to your stats.

Are my stats saved?
