Frequently asked questions
What is the hardest tongue twister?
Researchers at MIT reported in 2013 that "Pad kid poured curd pulled cod" was the hardest phrase in their speech-error study; many volunteers stopped altogether. Other famously hard ones are "The sixth sick sheikh's sixth sheep's sick", "Irish wristwatch" and "Truly rural".
Why are tongue twisters hard to say?
They repeat similar sounds that are made in nearby places in the mouth, such as S and SH or R and L. The brain plans the next sounds while speaking, and similar sounds get mixed up, which causes slips.
Do tongue twisters help speech?
They are a popular warm-up for actors, singers, presenters and language learners because they practise clear articulation of specific sounds. Speech therapists also use sound-targeted phrases. Start slowly and accurately, then increase speed.
What are good tongue twisters for kids?
Choose Easy for short, fun ones such as "Red lorry, yellow lorry", "Fresh fried fish", "Which witch is which?" and "Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear".
How does the Make your own generator work?
It picks names, adjectives, nouns, verbs and places that all start with the chosen sound and arranges them into alliterative patterns, from a single line to a long question in the style of Peter Piper.
Why can't I hear anything when I press Read aloud?
Read aloud uses your browser's built-in speech synthesis. Make sure the device volume is on. Some browsers load voices a moment after the page opens, and a few older browsers do not support speech at all.
