Superhero naming patterns
Most hero names fall into a handful of shapes. Pick one in Name style, or keep Mixed for variety:
| Style | How it is built | Example |
|---|---|---|
| One word | Power word + short suffix | Emberstrike, Tidalcrest |
| Title + name | Captain, Doctor, Agent, Lady… + power word | Agent Riptide, Doctor Hourglass |
| Two words | Power word + animal or role | Voltage Falcon, Granite Sentry |
| The ___ | Color or quality + noun | The Cobalt Vanguard |
| Name + rank | Power word + Knight, Ranger, Queen… | Glacier Knight, Lumina Queen |
Tips for creating an original hero
- Match the name to the power. A listener should guess the power from the name alone.
- Say it out loud. Two or three syllables per word work best for chants and catchphrases.
- Give them a limit. A weakness and a personal cost create tension and better stories.
- Think about the costume. Colors in the name (Cobalt, Crimson, Ivory) suggest a visual identity.
- Search before you publish. Many simple names are already used by comic publishers, games or brands.
Power themes at a glance
The 17 themes cover the classic elemental powers (fire, ice, water, wind, lightning, nature), physical powers (speed, strength, metal, gravity), and mental or abstract ones (mind, time, light, shadow, sound, cosmic and tech). Each theme has its own word list and a set of power descriptions, origins and weaknesses that are mixed at random, so the same name can come with a different story every time. For party games, generate a batch and let each player draw one. Pair it with the Fantasy Name Generator for side characters.
Frequently asked questions
How do I come up with a good superhero name?
Start from the power: a strong word linked to it (Riptide for water, Cinder for fire) plus a short suffix, a title such as Captain or Agent, or an animal or rank. Keep it to one to three words, easy to say out loud, and check that it is not already a famous character.
Are these names taken from Marvel or DC?
No. The word lists are original, and the generator filters out a long list of famous comic book hero and villain names. Because names are built from common words, double-check before using one commercially.
Can I use a generated name for my comic, game or story?
Yes, use them freely. For a published or commercial project, search the name online and check trademark databases first, because common words can be registered by others.
What does the weakness mean?
Classic heroes are more interesting when they have a limit. Each result includes a weakness, from serious (powers fade in the rain) to silly (sneezes near flowers), to spark story ideas.
Does it make villain names too?
Choose the Shadow, Mind or Gravity themes and The ___ style for darker names that work well for villains or anti-heroes.
Is my name saved?
No. Everything is generated in your browser. Only favorites and your last settings are kept in this browser's local storage.
