How to use the Charades Generator
Choose categories by tapping them (at least one) and pick a difficulty.
Card by card: the actor presses Draw next word, can hide the word, then acts it out without speaking.
Timed rounds: switch to Timed rounds, set the round length and number of teams, then press Start round.
Press Got it when the team guesses correctly or Skip to move on. Points are added automatically and the next team is shown when time is up.
Playing with paper? Open Make a word list to copy a list or print cut-out slips.
Charades rules and hand signals
Charades is a guessing game in which one player acts out a word or phrase without speaking while their team guesses. These are the classic signals most groups use:
Signal
Meaning
Hold up a number of fingers
Number of words in the phrase
Hold up fingers again
Which word you are acting now (first, second…)
Fingers laid on your forearm
Number of syllables in the word
Cupped hand behind your ear
"Sounds like" (act a rhyming word)
Small gap between thumb and finger
A short or small word (a, the, in)
Pulling hands apart
Make the word longer (jump → jumping)
Touching your nose and pointing
Someone guessed it correctly
Rolling hands forward
Keep guessing, you are close
Difficulty levels explained
Easy: single, familiar words that have one obvious action (cat, swimming, umbrella). Ideal for ages 4 and up.
Medium: short phrases or less common words that need two or three gestures (flying a kite, telescope, astronaut).
Hard: situations and unusual words that require creative acting (parallel parking, platypus, a courtroom drama). Best for teens and adults.
Party tips
For mixed ages, use Mixed difficulty and let younger players redraw once if a card is too hard.
Put the phone or tablet on the table face down between turns and use Hide word so the guessing team cannot peek.
Rotate actors within each team so everyone gets a turn.
For a big group with no screen, print the slips, fold them and draw from a bowl.
Frequently asked questions
How do you play charades?
Players split into teams. One player draws a word and acts it out silently, using only gestures and movement, while their team tries to guess it before time runs out. No talking, mouthing words or pointing at objects in the room. Each correct guess scores one point, and teams take turns acting.
What are the standard charades hand signals?
Common signals are: hold up fingers to show the number of words, then the word you are acting; tap fingers on your forearm for the number of syllables; cup your hand to your ear for 'sounds like'; make a small or large gap between finger and thumb for a short or long word; and point to your nose when someone guesses correctly.
What are good charades ideas for kids?
Young children do best with simple animals (dog, elephant, penguin), everyday actions (brushing teeth, jumping, sleeping) and familiar objects (ball, umbrella, pizza). Tick Kids mode to limit the words to easy ones and show an emoji picture so non-readers can play too.
Why are there no real movie titles?
Movie titles are owned by studios and vary by age and country, so the Movie scenes category uses generic movie ideas such as 'a shipwreck on an island' or 'a robot learning to dance'. They are just as fun to act out and everyone can play.
How long should a charades round be?
60 seconds per turn is the most common choice and keeps the game fast. Use 90 seconds to 2 minutes for hard words, large groups or younger players, and 30 seconds for a quick-fire speed round.
Will the same word come up twice?
No. The generator shuffles all matching words into a deck and draws each one once. When every word has been used it reshuffles and tells you, so repeats only happen after the whole deck is finished.
Does it work offline?
Yes. All words, the timer and the scores live in the page, so once it has loaded you can play without an internet connection. Team names and settings are remembered in your browser.
