How to use the Solitaire

  1. Choose Draw 1 or Draw 3. Draw 1 turns over one card at a time and is easier; Draw 3 turns over three.
  2. Move cards by dragging them, or click a card to send it to the best spot automatically.
  3. Build the tableau down in alternating colors (red on black, black on red). Only a King can go into an empty column.
  4. Click the stock (top left) to turn over new cards. When it's empty, click it again to turn the waste pile back over.
  5. Build each foundation from Ace to King in one suit. When every card is face up, auto-complete finishes the game for you.

Solitaire rules in short

AreaWhat goes there
Tableau (7 columns)Build down in alternating colors, for example a red 6 on a black 7. You can move a whole face-up run at once. Only a King (or a run starting with a King) can fill an empty column.
Foundations (4 piles)One pile per suit, built up from Ace to King. Move all 52 cards here to win.
StockThe face-down pile. Click it to turn over 1 or 3 cards onto the waste pile.
WasteThe top card can be played to the tableau or a foundation. When the stock runs out, turn the waste back over.

Solitaire strategy tips

  • Turn over face-down cards first. Moves that reveal a hidden tableau card are usually the most valuable.
  • Empty columns are precious. Don't create one unless you have a King ready to move into it.
  • Play from the longest columns. Columns with the most hidden cards are the hardest to clear, so work on them early.
  • Don't rush cards to the foundations. Low cards like Aces and 2s should go up right away, but keeping some 4s, 5s and 6s in the tableau gives you somewhere to place other cards.
  • Use undo to explore. If you're not sure which move is better, try one and undo it if it leads nowhere.

Frequently asked questions

What is Klondike Solitaire?

Klondike is the classic version of solitaire that came with Windows. You deal 28 cards into seven columns, then try to move all 52 cards onto four foundation piles, one per suit, in order from Ace to King.

What is the difference between Draw 1 and Draw 3?

In Draw 1 you turn over one card from the stock at a time and every card is playable, which makes the game easier. In Draw 3 you turn over three cards and only the top one can be played, so many more games can't be won.

How does scoring work?

This game uses standard Windows-style scoring: +5 for moving a card from the waste to the tableau or turning over a tableau card, +10 for each card moved to a foundation, −15 for moving a card back from a foundation, and a penalty for turning the waste pile over (−100 in Draw 1, −20 in Draw 3). Winning adds a time bonus.

Can I undo a move?

Yes. Press Undo or Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on Mac) to take back as many moves as you like, including turning cards from the stock.

Is every game of solitaire winnable?

No. Most Draw 1 Klondike deals can be won with perfect play (roughly 80%), but many can't, and the share is lower in Draw 3. If you get stuck, start a new game or restart the same deal and try a different strategy.

Does the game save my progress?

Yes. Your current game and your win record are saved in your browser on this device, so you can close the tab and continue later.
