About the country data
The list covers every sovereign state that is a member of the United Nations (193) plus the two non-member observer states, the Holy See (Vatican City) and the State of Palestine. Capitals are the official capitals; where a country divides the role between cities or the status is disputed, the card says so, as for Bolivia, South Africa, Israel and Palestine.
Population figures are rounded estimates for 2024, mainly from the UN World Population Prospects, and are shown as approximate. Areas are total areas in square kilometres including inland water, as commonly published in national statistics and reference atlases. Flag emoji are built from each country's two-letter ISO 3166-1 code, so they need no images and work offline.
Frequently asked questions
How many countries are in the generator?
195: the 193 member states of the United Nations plus the two UN observer states, Vatican City (the Holy See) and Palestine. Tick Include territories to add places such as Taiwan, Kosovo, Hong Kong, Greenland and Puerto Rico.
How are countries assigned to continents?
Mostly by the United Nations geoscheme. Russia is listed in Europe and Turkey in Asia, the Caucasus countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia) are in Asia, Cyprus is in Europe, and Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean belong to North America.
How accurate are the population figures?
They are rounded recent estimates, mostly from the UN World Population Prospects 2024, and are marked approx. Populations change every year and national statistics offices sometimes publish different numbers, so use them for a sense of scale rather than exact counts.
Why do some countries show more than one capital?
Some countries split capital functions. South Africa has Pretoria (executive), Cape Town (legislative) and Bloemfontein (judicial); Bolivia's constitutional capital is Sucre while the government sits in La Paz; and the Netherlands' capital is Amsterdam although the government is in The Hague.
Why does a flag show as two letters?
Flags are standard emoji made from two regional-indicator letters (the country's ISO code). Most phones, Macs and browsers draw them as flags, but Windows shows the two letters instead. The country information is the same either way.
What can I use a random country for?
Geography quizzes and classroom games, picking a travel destination or a cuisine to cook tonight, choosing a theme for a party, learning flags and capitals, writing prompts and fair random assignments for model UN or school projects.
