Design tips for readable quote images
Contrast first. Light text on a dark background (or the reverse) is easiest to read on a small phone screen. When you click a background, the tool picks white or dark text automatically; you can change it afterwards.
Keep it short. Quotes under about 20 words work best. Longer text is shrunk to fit, but large text stops people scrolling.
Calm photos. On a busy photo, raise Darken to 40–60% and add a little blur, or turn on a text panel.
One font, two sizes. The quote and the author use the same typeface at different sizes, which looks cleaner than mixing several fonts.
Credit correctly. Many famous lines are attributed to the wrong person online. Check the source before posting, or use your own words.
To put text on top of an existing photo at any position, try Add Text to Image; for captions in the classic top-and-bottom style use the Meme Generator.
Frequently asked questions
What size should a quote image be for Instagram?
A square post is 1080 × 1080 pixels and a portrait post is 1080 × 1350 pixels, which takes up more space in the feed. Stories and Reels covers use 1080 × 1920 pixels. Keep important text away from the top and bottom 250 pixels of a Story, where the app shows its own buttons.
How does the text fit the image?
The tool wraps your quote into lines and checks whether it fits inside the margins. If it does not, it reduces the font size step by step until everything fits, so long quotes never get cut off. The size slider sets the largest size you want.
Can I use my own photo as the background?
Yes. Choose Photo and pick an image from your device. It is scaled to cover the whole canvas. Use the darken slider to make light text readable, and the blur slider to make a busy photo calmer. The photo is not uploaded anywhere.
Which fonts can I use?
The tool uses fonts that are already installed on your device, such as Georgia, Palatino, Helvetica or Arial, so it works offline and loads instantly. The exact look can differ slightly between Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone.
Can I use famous quotes?
Short quotations with correct attribution are widely shared, and the random examples here are classic quotes with their commonly cited authors. Always check the attribution of quotes you find online, since many popular sayings are attributed to the wrong person. For your own brand, original text is the safest choice.
PNG or JPG?
PNG is lossless and keeps text perfectly crisp, which is ideal for plain or gradient backgrounds. JPG files are smaller and work well when the background is a photo.
