Add a soft sepia, cream or pastel background to a PDF for easier reading, or brand pages with your own hex color. The color goes behind the existing text and images, on every page or only the pages you pick.

How to use the Change PDF Background Color
Choose your PDF by dropping it on the box or clicking to browse.
Pick a color from the presets or enter any hex code such as #F4ECD8.
Choose the method: Behind content for normal digital PDFs, or Tint for scans and PDFs whose pages are painted white.
Select pages if only some pages should change, for example 1-3, odd or even. Leave blank for all pages.
Press Change background & download PDF to save the recolored file.
Behind content or tint: which method to use
Behind content
Tint (multiply)
How it works
A full-page rectangle in your color is drawn first, underneath everything else
A full-page rectangle is blended on top with the Multiply blend mode
Text and images
Completely unchanged
Black stays black; colors and images are tinted slightly
Scanned pages
No visible change (the scan covers the background)
White paper takes the new color
Best for
PDFs exported from Word, Google Docs, LaTeX or design apps
Scans, photos of documents and PDFs that paint their own white page
Multiply works like overlapping colored filters: each color channel of the page is multiplied by the tint, so white (1.0) becomes exactly your color, black (0) stays black, and mid-tones get proportionally darker.

Slides or PDFs that already use light text
Some readers, including people with visual stress or dyslexia, find a tinted background easier on the eyes than bright white. Preferences vary, so try a few presets with the live preview. For print, keep colors light: a full-page background uses ink or toner over the whole sheet.
Frequently asked questions
How do I change the background color of a PDF?
Open the PDF here, choose a preset such as Sepia or type a hex color, and press Change background. The color is painted as a full-page rectangle underneath the existing content, so text and images stay exactly as they were.
Why didn't the background change on my scanned PDF?
A scanned page is one opaque picture that covers the whole page, so a color placed behind it is hidden. Switch to Tint (multiply). It blends the color over the page: white paper takes on the color while black text stays black. The same applies to PDFs that paint their own white background.
Which background color is easiest to read?
Many readers find warm, low-contrast backgrounds such as sepia (#F4ECD8) or cream (#FDF6E3) more comfortable than bright white for long reading sessions on screen. Keep the background light so dark text keeps enough contrast.
Can I make a PDF dark mode with this tool?
Not on its own: a dark background behind black text makes the text hard to read. For a dark reading mode use the Invert PDF Colors tool, which turns black text white and white pages black. The Night preset suits PDFs whose text is already light.
Will a colored background print?
Yes. The background is part of the page, so it prints like any other content and uses ink or toner across the whole page. For printing, light colors are recommended; keep an uncolored copy if you only want the color on screen.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The PDF is changed entirely in your browser with the pdf-lib library and never leaves your device.
