How to use the Unlock PDF
Choose the locked PDF by dropping it into the box or clicking to browse.
Read the status: the tool shows the encryption type and whether an open password is required.
Type the password if one is needed. For restriction-only PDFs you can skip this step.
Press Unlock PDF to decrypt the file in your browser.
Download the unlocked PDF. It opens without a password and allows printing, copying and editing.
Two kinds of PDF protection
A protected PDF can use one or both of these locks. The tool tells you which ones your file has before you unlock it.

How unlocking works
The tool checks your password against the hashes stored in the PDF's encryption dictionary, recovers the file key, decrypts every string and stream with the same algorithm the PDF reader uses (RC4 or AES-CBC), removes the encryption dictionary and saves a clean copy. Page content is not re-rendered, so text stays selectable and the quality is identical to the original.

Frequently asked questions
How do I remove a password from a PDF?
Open the PDF in this tool, type its password and press Unlock PDF, then download the new file. The copy is fully decrypted, so it opens without a password in any PDF reader. The original file is not changed.
Can I unlock a PDF without the password?
If the PDF opens without a password and only blocks printing, copying or editing, yes: this tool removes those restrictions without asking for a password. If the PDF needs a password to open, its content is encrypted with that password and you must know it. This tool does not guess or crack passwords.
Which password should I enter, the user or the owner password?
Either works. The user (open) password is the one you type to view the file. The owner (permissions) password is the one used to set restrictions. Entering either one is enough to save a fully unlocked copy.
Which kinds of PDF encryption are supported?
All password-based encryption from the PDF standard: RC4 with 40-bit and 128-bit keys, AES-128 and AES-256, including the AES-256 variant used by Acrobat 9. PDFs encrypted for digital certificates (public-key security) cannot be unlocked with a password.
Is it legal to unlock a PDF?
Removing a password from your own documents, or from files you were given the password for, is normal and legal in most places. Do not use it to bypass restrictions on documents you are not allowed to change, such as copyrighted material whose owner forbids copying.
Is my PDF or password uploaded?
No. The file is read, decrypted and saved entirely in your browser using the Web Crypto API. Neither the PDF nor the password is sent to a server.
