Where the signature ends up in the PDF

A PDF page measures its size in points, where 72 points equal one inch. A US Letter page is 612 × 792 points and an A4 page is 595 × 842 points. When you place a signature, the tool stores its position as a fraction of the page width and height, then converts it to points when you download. The bottom-left corner of the page is the origin in PDF coordinates, so a signature drawn 1 inch from the left and 1.5 inches from the bottom of a Letter page starts at x = 72, y = 108.

Pages that are rotated inside the PDF (for example a landscape scan stored as a portrait page with a 90° rotation flag) are handled automatically: the signature is turned with the page so that it appears upright exactly where you placed it.

Typical signature sizes

ItemTypical widthTypical height
Full signature on a contract2 – 2.75 in (144 – 200 pt)0.5 – 0.8 in (36 – 58 pt)
Initials in a page corner0.5 – 0.8 in (36 – 58 pt)0.25 – 0.4 in (18 – 29 pt)
Date next to a signature1 – 1.6 in (72 – 115 pt)about 0.2 in (15 pt)

New signatures are placed at about a third of the page width (at most 200 points) and date and text stamps at a height of 15 points, which matches normal 11 – 12 pt document text. Drag the corner handle to make them bigger or smaller.

Frequently asked questions

How do I sign a PDF without printing it?

Open the PDF here, draw or type your signature, click on the page where it should go and download the signed copy. The signature is added as an image on the page, so you never have to print, sign and scan the document.

Is a signature added this way legally binding?

In many countries, including the US (ESIGN Act) and the EU (eIDAS simple electronic signature), an image of your signature that you place on a document to show agreement can count as an electronic signature. Some documents need a certified digital signature or a witness, so check what the recipient requires.

Is this the same as a certificate-based digital signature?

No. This tool places a visible signature image on the page. It does not add a cryptographic certificate that locks the document. If you need a certificate-based signature (for example for some government forms), use software that supports digital IDs.

How do I make an uploaded signature transparent?

Sign on plain white paper with a dark pen, take a sharp photo or scan, and upload it with Remove white background switched on. Move the background cut-off slider down if grey paper remains, or up if thin pen lines disappear.

Can I add the date and my initials?

Yes. In step 2 choose a date and format and press Add date stamp, or type initials or any text and press Add text. They appear next to your signatures in step 3 and are placed the same way.

Can I put my signature on every page?

Yes. Place it once, keep it selected and press Copy selected to all pages. Each copy can then be moved or deleted on its own.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The PDF is opened and signed entirely in your browser with the pdf-lib and pdf.js libraries. Your document and signature never leave your device.
