How to use the PDF Word Counter
- Open a PDF with the Open PDF button or drag it onto the drop area.
- Wait a moment while every page is read; a progress bar shows how far it is.
- Read the totals: words, characters with and without spaces, lines, pages and reading time.
- Check the table for the count on each page and the list of most frequent words.
- Export CSV to save the per-page counts, or copy the summary or the text.
How the PDF word count works
A PDF does not store paragraphs the way a word processor does. Each page holds small runs of text placed at exact coordinates. This tool reads those runs with pdf.js, rebuilds lines from their positions, and then counts:
- Words: runs of characters separated by spaces or line breaks that contain at least one letter or digit. "e-mail", "don't" and "3.5" each count as one word; a lone bullet "•" or dash "–" is not a word.
- Characters: every character including spaces, with each line break counted as one space (matching how Word and Google Docs count "characters with spaces").
- Characters (no spaces): the same text with all whitespace removed.
- Lines: the number of non-empty text lines on the page.
Typical words per page
| Document type | Approx. words per page |
|---|---|
| Single-spaced, 12 pt, 1-inch margins (Letter/A4) | 500–550 |
| Double-spaced, 12 pt (essays, manuscripts) | 250–300 |
| Academic paper with figures and references | 350–500 |
| Paperback novel page | 250–300 |
| Slide deck exported to PDF | 20–80 |
These are rules of thumb; font, line spacing, headings and images change the real number a lot. That is exactly why counting the actual PDF is more reliable than estimating from the page count.
Tips for accurate counts
- Scanned PDFs contain pictures of text, not text. If a page shows 0 words, run OCR in a PDF app first, then count again.
- Exclude front and back matter such as the title page, table of contents and references by subtracting those pages using the per-page table, or split them off first with Split PDF.
- Hyphenated line breaks ("docu-" / "ment") are counted as two words in some PDFs. For long texts the effect is usually well under 1%.
- Need the text itself? Use PDF to Text to extract and download it page by page.
Frequently asked questions
How do I count the words in a PDF?
Open the PDF here and the tool reads the text layer of every page with pdf.js, then counts the words. A word is any run of characters between spaces or line breaks that contains at least one letter or digit, so stray symbols such as bullets or dashes are not counted.
Why does a page show 0 words?
That page has no selectable text. It is usually a scanned page or a picture of text, which needs OCR (optical character recognition) before words can be counted. Pages like this are listed in a warning above the table.
Will the count match Microsoft Word?
It is usually very close but not always identical. PDFs store text in positioned fragments rather than paragraphs, so hyphenated line breaks, headers, footers, page numbers and footnotes are all counted as they appear on the page. Word may treat some of these differently.
Are headers, footers and page numbers included?
Yes. Everything in the page's text layer is counted, including running headers, footers, page numbers, captions and footnotes. Text inside form fields and comments is not part of the page text and is not counted.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The PDF is opened and read entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, so it is safe to use with confidential documents.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time uses an average silent reading speed of 238 words per minute for adults reading non-fiction, and speaking time uses about 150 words per minute, a typical pace for presentations and speeches.
