Reconciling with your bank statement
Tick ✓ for every transaction that appears on the statement.
Add any items you did not record: bank fees, interest, automatic payments.
Take the statement's ending balance, subtract outstanding (unticked) payments and add deposits in transit.
The result should equal your register balance. In this tool, the cleared balance should match the bank's balance for the same date.
Example (the sample register in the tool): bank balance $4,592.08, outstanding checks and card payments $240.10, deposit in transit $125.00 → $4,592.08 − $240.10 + $125.00 = $4,476.98, the register balance.
Tips
Write it down right away, including small card purchases; they add up fastest.
Record pending automatic payments on the day they are scheduled so the balance shows what is really available.
Use large lines if you write by hand in a checkbook cover, and landscape for a binder.
Frequently asked questions
What is a check register?
A check register is a log of every transaction in a checking account: checks written, debit card purchases, ATM withdrawals, automatic payments, fees and deposits. Each line updates the running balance, so you always know how much money is available, even before the bank posts the transaction.
How do I calculate the running balance?
Start with your opening balance. For every line, new balance = previous balance - payment - fee + deposit. For example, $2,450.00 + $1,875.40 deposit - $1,350.00 rent check = $2,975.40.
What does the check mark (cleared) column mean?
Tick it when a transaction appears on your bank statement or online banking. The cleared balance (starting balance plus only cleared items) should match the bank's balance; any difference is made up of outstanding checks and deposits in transit.
How do I balance my checkbook with my bank statement?
Mark every item on the statement as cleared. Add any bank fees or interest you had not recorded. Then the bank's ending balance minus uncleared payments plus uncleared deposits should equal your register balance. If it does not, look for a missing entry, a transposed number or a math error.
What should I write in the check number column?
Write the check number for paper checks. For other transactions use a short code, such as DEB for a debit card purchase, ATM for a cash withdrawal, AUTO for an automatic payment, DEP for a deposit or TRF for a transfer.
How many lines fit on a page?
On US Letter portrait with standard lines there are 31 lines per page; compact lines give 39 and large lines 24 (A4 gives 33, 42 and 26). Landscape pages fit fewer but wider lines. The exact count for your settings is shown above the page preview.
