Resize PDF
Change the paper size of every page in a PDF. Pick A4, US Letter, Legal, A3 or your own size, decide how the content should fit, add a margin if you like, and download the resized PDF. It all runs in your browser.
How to use the Resize PDF
- Open your PDF by dropping it on the box or clicking to choose it.
- Choose the new page size, or pick Custom size and enter width and height.
- Set orientation and scaling: Fit keeps proportions, Stretch fills the page, Original size keeps the content at 100%.
- Add a margin if you need white space around the content, and check the preview with Prev and Next.
- Press Resize PDF to download the resized file.
Scale factors between common paper sizes
With Fit, the content is multiplied by the smaller of the two ratios new width ÷ old width and new height ÷ old height, so it always fits without distortion. These are the factors for portrait pages without a margin.
| From | To | Width ratio | Height ratio | Content scale |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| US Letter | A4 | 595 ÷ 612 = 0.973 | 842 ÷ 792 = 1.063 | 97.3% |
| A4 | US Letter | 612 ÷ 595 = 1.029 | 792 ÷ 842 = 0.941 | 94.1% |
| A4 | A5 | 0.707 | 0.707 | 70.7% |
| A4 | A3 | 1.414 | 1.414 | 141.4% |
| US Legal | US Letter | 1.000 | 0.786 | 78.6% |
A-series sizes all share the same 1 : √2 shape, so moving between A3, A4 and A5 scales by exactly √2 (about 1.414) or 1/√2 (about 0.707) with no white space.
Resize, crop or compress?
- Resize PDF changes the paper size and scales the content. Use it to print a Letter document on A4 paper or to make every page the same size.
- Crop PDF cuts away part of each page without scaling. Use it to remove white margins or scanner edges.
- Compress PDF reduces the file size in megabytes. Resizing the page does not make the file smaller.
Printing tips
Most home printers cannot print right to the edge of the paper and need about 3 to 5 mm of unprinted border. If the content of your PDF goes edge to edge, add a 5 mm margin here so nothing gets cut off when printing.
Frequently asked questions
How do I change a PDF from Letter to A4?
Open the PDF, choose A4 as the new page size, keep Fit selected and press Resize PDF. Letter pages are slightly wider and shorter than A4, so the content is scaled to about 97% and centred with a small gap at the top and bottom.
Will resizing a PDF make the text blurry?
No. Each original page is placed onto the new page as vector content, so text and drawings stay sharp at any zoom and text remains selectable. Only the scale changes.
What is the difference between Fit and Stretch?
Fit enlarges or shrinks the page evenly so nothing is distorted, which can leave white space on two sides. Stretch scales width and height separately so the content fills the new page exactly, which can make text look slightly squashed.
What happens with Original size?
The content keeps its original size and is centred on the new page. On a larger page you get extra white space around it. On a smaller page the edges are cut off, which is useful for trimming print margins.
Are links and form fields kept?
The visible content of every page is kept, but interactive elements such as links, comments and fillable form fields are not carried over to the resized pages. Fill in or flatten forms before resizing if you need their contents.
What sizes are A4 and US Letter?
A4 is 210 × 297 mm (8.27 × 11.69 in) and is the standard in most of the world. US Letter is 8.5 × 11 in (215.9 × 279.4 mm) and is standard in the United States and Canada.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The PDF is read and rebuilt entirely inside your browser, so your document never leaves your device.
