How to use the PDF to Speech Reader
Choose a PDF or drag it onto the drop zone. The text is extracted page by page.
Pick a voice and set the speed and pitch you like.
Set the page range if you only want to hear part of the document.
Press Play, or click any sentence to start reading from it. Press Space to pause and the arrow keys to skip sentences.
Copy or download the text if you also want it as a plain text file.
How the PDF reader works
Text extraction. The PDF is opened with PDF.js, the same engine used by Firefox, and the text of each page is read in reading order.
Clean-up. Lines are joined into paragraphs, words broken by a hyphen at the end of a line are rejoined, and (optionally) page numbers and headers or footers that repeat on most pages are skipped.
Sentences. Paragraphs are split into sentences, taking care not to split after abbreviations such as "Dr." or "e.g.". Very long sentences are split at commas so the voice never stalls.
Speech. Each sentence is sent to your browser's speech engine (the Web Speech API) one after another, which lets the tool highlight what is being read and jump to any sentence instantly.

Tips for better listening
Try several voices. Voices labelled "Natural", "Neural", "Enhanced" or "Premium" usually sound far more human than the basic ones.
Increase speed gradually. Many people comfortably follow 1.3× to 1.6× after a few minutes of listening.
Read one chapter at a time with the page range, so the reader does not start with the table of contents.
Proofread by ear. Listening to your own document is a good way to spot missing words and awkward sentences.
Frequently asked questions
Is this PDF reader free and private?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up. The PDF is opened and its text is extracted in your browser, and the speech is produced by your own device's voices, so the document is never uploaded.
Why does it say my PDF has no text?
Scanned documents and PDFs made from photos contain images of text rather than real text, so there is nothing to read aloud. Run the file through OCR (optical character recognition) first to add a text layer, then open it again.
Which voices can I use?
The tool uses the Web Speech API, so the list comes from your browser and operating system. Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and ChromeOS include several natural voices; Edge and Chrome add extra online voices. You can install more voices in your system's speech or language settings.
Can I download the speech as an MP3?
No. Browsers do not let web pages record the output of the built-in speech engine, so the audio is played live. You can download the extracted text as a .txt file instead.
How fast can it read?
Speed goes from 0.5× to 2.5×. At 1× most voices speak about 150 to 170 words per minute, so a typical 300-word page takes roughly two minutes. The time-left estimate updates as you change the speed.
Does it keep reading if I switch tabs?
In most desktop browsers it does. On some phones, reading may stop when the screen locks or the browser goes to the background; press Play again to continue from the highlighted sentence.
Can it read PDFs in other languages?
Yes, if your device has a voice for that language. Choose a voice from the matching language group; using an English voice for other languages gives poor pronunciation.
