How PDF page rotation works

Every page in a PDF has a /Rotate value that tells readers how to display it. It can only be 0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees, measured clockwise. This tool adds your rotation to the value already stored in the file and keeps the result within 0 to 359 degrees.

Stored rotationYou rotateSaved rotationResult
0°↻ 90°90°Portrait page shown as landscape
90°↻ 90°180°Page shown upside down compared to the original
90°↺ 90°0°Back to the page's natural orientation
0°180°180°Fixes a page scanned upside down
270°↻ 90°0°270 + 90 = 360, which is the same as 0°

Common reasons pages end up sideways

  • Scanned documents fed into the scanner in the wrong direction, or phone scans taken in landscape.
  • Mixed page sizes, such as a landscape spreadsheet inside a portrait report.
  • Merged files where one source PDF had a different orientation. After rotating, you can combine files again with Merge PDF.

Rotating for viewing vs. rotating the file

The rotate button in most PDF viewers only turns the page on your screen, and the change is lost when you close the file. Saving with this tool changes the document itself, so everyone who opens it sees the pages the right way up. If you only need a few of the pages afterwards, use Split PDF to extract them.

Frequently asked questions

How do I rotate a PDF and save it permanently?

Open the PDF above, rotate the pages you need and press Rotate & download PDF. The tool writes the new orientation into the file itself, so the pages stay rotated in every PDF reader, on any device, and when you print or share the file.

Can I rotate just one page of a PDF?

Yes. Use the rotate buttons under that page's thumbnail. Only the pages you turn are changed. All other pages keep their original orientation.

Does rotating a PDF reduce its quality?

No. The tool changes the page rotation setting in the PDF instead of turning the pages into images, so text stays selectable and searchable and images keep their full resolution.

Which way do I rotate a sideways page?

If the top of the content points to the left, rotate right (clockwise) by 90°. If it points to the right, rotate left. If the page is upside down, rotate it 180°. The thumbnails show the result before you save.

Why does a page already look rotated in the preview?

Some PDFs store pages with a rotation value already set, which is common for scanned documents. The preview shows how the page looks today, and your rotation is added on top of that value.

Can I rotate a password-protected PDF?

PDFs that need a password to open, or that are encrypted with editing restrictions, cannot be changed here. Remove the protection in a PDF app where you know the password, then rotate the unlocked copy.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The PDF is read and saved entirely inside your browser, so the document never leaves your computer or phone.
