Flags that are easy to mix up
| Pair | How to tell them apart |
|---|---|
| Chad and Romania | Almost identical blue–yellow–red stripes; Chad's blue is a little darker. In the quiz, think region: Chad is in Africa, Romania in Europe. |
| Indonesia and Monaco | Both red over white; Monaco's flag is squarer (4:5) while Indonesia's is longer (2:3). |
| Poland and Indonesia | Poland is white over red – the other way round. |
| Ireland and Ivory Coast | Mirror images: Ireland is green–white–orange from the flagpole, Ivory Coast is orange–white–green. |
| Netherlands and Luxembourg | Same red–white–blue stripes; Luxembourg uses a lighter sky blue. |
| Australia and New Zealand | Australia has white stars and a big seven-pointed star; New Zealand has four red stars with white borders. |
| Norway, Iceland and Denmark | All Nordic crosses: Denmark red with white, Norway red with a blue-and-white cross, Iceland blue with a red-and-white cross. |
| Senegal and Mali | Same green–yellow–red; Senegal has a green star in the middle. |

Tips for learning flags fast
- Learn by region. Start with a region of 14–35 countries before taking on all 196.
- Group by pattern: tricolors, Nordic crosses, Pan-African colors (green, yellow, red), Pan-Arab colors (red, white, black, green) and Union Jack flags.
- Use the mistakes review. Practice my mistakes replays only the flags you got wrong until they stick.
- Switch modes. Recognizing a flag is easier than recalling it; Country → flag and typed answers make the knowledge last.
- Play little and often. A daily 60-second blitz is enough to see steady progress.
Frequently asked questions
How many countries are in the flag quiz?
196: all 193 member states of the United Nations plus Vatican City, Palestine and Taiwan. Regions follow the UN geoscheme, so Africa has 54 countries, the Americas 35, Asia 49, Europe 44 and Oceania 14.
Why do I see letters like FR instead of flags?
The quiz uses the flag emoji built into your device. Windows doesn't include flag emoji, so it shows the two-letter country code instead (FR for France, JP for Japan). Phones, Macs, Chromebooks and most Linux systems show real flags.
Which answers are accepted when typing?
The official short name and common alternatives are accepted, for example USA or America, UK or Great Britain, Holland, Czech Republic, Burma, Ivory Coast or Côte d'Ivoire. Accents, capital letters and 'the' are ignored, and one small typo is forgiven in longer names.
How does the 60-second blitz work?
You have one minute to identify as many flags as possible with four choices each. Answers move on automatically, so speed matters. Your best blitz score for each region is saved.
Why are the wrong answers so similar?
Wrong choices are picked from the same region as the right answer whenever possible, so you might have to tell apart Chad and Romania or Indonesia and Monaco – just like in real flag trivia.
