How to use the Monogram Maker
- Type your initials in the First, Middle and Last boxes. Leave Middle empty for a two-letter monogram.
- Choose a layout. Classic, circle, diamond and interlocking put the last-name initial in the center; In order keeps first, middle, last.
- Pick a frame such as a circle, laurel wreath or diamond, or None for letters only.
- Set the font and colors, adjust the letter size, and add an optional line of text below.
- Download a PNG for printing or sharing, or an SVG for engraving, cutting machines and large prints.
Monogram letter order at a glance
Examples use the name Jane Marie Smith (initials J, M, S).
| Layout | Reads | Rule | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic three-letter | j S m | First initial left, larger last-name initial center, middle initial right | Towels, robes, stationery, jewelry |
| In order (block) | J M S | Same size, written in name order | Men's shirts, cufflinks, luggage tags |
| Stacked | S with J over M | Large last-name initial, first and middle stacked beside it | Labels, return address stamps |
| Circle or diamond | j S m | Same order as classic; letters reshaped to fill the shape | Tumblers, decals, phone cases, pillows |
| Interlocking | J S M overlapping | Letters overlap and cut through each other | Logos, signet rings, wax seals |
| Two letters | J S | First and last initials | Personal logos, couples (two first initials) |
| Single letter | S | Last-name initial | Doormats, family signs, wax seals |
Special cases
- No middle name: leave Middle empty. Classic layouts then show two letters of equal size; or use the Single letter layout with your last-name initial.
- Hyphenated or double last names: many people use both last-name initials, or only the first one, in the center. Try the In order layout to show all initials clearly.
- Children's items: a simple first-name initial or the In order layout is easiest to read on backpacks and lunch boxes.
- Family monograms: use the Single letter layout with the shared last-name initial and add the family name or year in the text line below.
Tips for a great monogram
- Check readability at the real size. Fine script strokes can disappear when embroidered small or printed on fabric; a serif or bold font holds up better.
- Use bold letters for circle and diamond styles. The letters get stretched, and thin fonts become hard to read.
- Match the frame to the item. A laurel or flourish suits invitations and certificates, a plain circle or square suits stamps and labels.
- Use a transparent background for printing on colored paper, mugs and shirts.
- Planning a wedding? The wedding monogram maker adds names and the wedding date. For a full family crest, try the coat of arms maker.
Frequently asked questions
What is the correct order of letters in a monogram?
For a traditional three-letter personal monogram, the last-name initial goes in the center and is larger, with the first-name initial on the left and the middle-name initial on the right. So Jane Marie Smith becomes j S m. When all letters are the same size and in a line, they are written in normal order: J M S.
What is the difference between a circle and a diamond monogram?
Both use the classic f L m order. In a circle monogram the letters are stretched to fill a round shape, so the outer letters curve with the edge. In a diamond monogram the center letter is tall and the side letters get shorter toward the points, forming a diamond outline.
How do I make a two-letter monogram?
Leave the Middle box empty and pick Two letters, Classic or Interlocking. Two-letter monograms are often first and last initials for one person, or two first initials for a couple. For a couple's monogram with a wedding date, use the wedding monogram maker.
Can I use the monogram for embroidery, vinyl or engraving?
Yes. Download the SVG, which scales without blur. In cutting or engraving software, convert the text to outlines or paths first. Embroidery machines usually need the design digitized in embroidery software, which can import the SVG or a large PNG.
Which font works best for a monogram?
Serif fonts such as Playfair Display and Bodoni look formal and classic, script fonts suit elegant gifts and stationery, blackletter gives an old-world look, and bold sans fonts such as Oswald work best for circle and diamond monograms because the letters stay readable when stretched.
What PNG size should I choose?
600 px is enough for profile pictures and websites. 2400 px prints sharply at 8 × 8 inches at 300 dpi, which covers stationery, labels and most signs. Use 3600 px or the SVG for larger prints.
Are the fonts free to use?
Yes. The fonts come from Google Fonts under open licenses (mostly the SIL Open Font License), which allow personal and commercial use in images and printed items.
