How to maximize your PTO
The idea is simple: every PTO day you place next to a weekend or holiday gets "free" days attached. The efficiency of a break is days off ÷ PTO days used.

Tips for planning time off
Request early: the most efficient bridges (around Thanksgiving, Christmas and July 4) are popular with coworkers too.
Thanksgiving to Christmas: late November and the week between Christmas and New Year's usually give the best ratios, especially if your company closes on extra days.
Balance the year: spreading breaks every two to three months helps avoid burnout better than saving everything for one trip.
Check your policy: carry-over limits, blackout dates and whether holidays are paid vary by employer.
Frequently asked questions
How does the PTO optimizer work?
It marks every weekend and holiday as a day off, finds every stretch of workdays between days off that could be filled with PTO, and then uses dynamic programming to pick the combination of non-overlapping breaks that gives the most total days off for the PTO days you have.
What are bridge days?
Bridge days are workdays that sit between a holiday and a weekend. When Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, taking Friday off creates a 4-day weekend for 1 PTO day; when a holiday falls on Tuesday, taking Monday off does the same.
Which US federal holidays are included?
New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington's Birthday (Presidents' Day), Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. When one falls on a Saturday it is observed on Friday, and on a Sunday it is observed on Monday.
My employer doesn't give all federal holidays. What should I choose?
Many private employers give only six: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Choose that option and tick the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve if your company closes then.
Why does the plan suggest lots of long weekends?
Short bridges are the most efficient: 1 PTO day next to a Monday holiday gives 4 days off. If you prefer one or two longer trips, set the shortest break to 7 or 9 days and raise the most PTO in one break.
Does a holiday on a Saturday still count?
For federal employees and many employers, a Saturday holiday is observed on the Friday before and a Sunday holiday on the Monday after, so you still get a weekday off. The optimizer uses those observed dates.
