Turn a scanned PDF, or photos of pages, into an editable Word document. Each page is read with OCR, the lines are rebuilt into real paragraphs, headings and lists, and you can correct the text before downloading the .docx. Nothing is uploaded.

How to use the Scanned PDF to Word (OCR)
Drop your scanned PDF, or select photos of the pages.
Choose the document language and the scan quality (300 dpi for small print).
Press Start OCR and watch each page's progress; the first run downloads the OCR engine.
Review the text in the editable preview; highlighted words are the ones OCR was unsure about.
Download Word (.docx) to keep editing in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice.
How the paragraphs are rebuilt
OCR engines return text line by line, which is why many converters produce a Word file with a hard break at the end of every line. This tool looks at the position and size of each recognized line and puts lines back together the way a person would read them:
Signal on the page
What it becomes in Word
Larger vertical gap than the normal line spacing
A new paragraph
A line that ends well before the right margin
The end of a paragraph
First-line indent
The start of a new paragraph
Text noticeably taller than the body text (about 1.35× or more)
Heading 1 or Heading 2
Line starting with •, -, * or 1. / a)
Bulleted or numbered list item
Line with equal space on both sides
Centered paragraph
Word broken with a hyphen at the end of a line
The whole word, joined again
Getting better results from scans
Scan at 300 dpi in grayscale or black and white; color adds file size but not accuracy.
Keep pages straight. A tilt of more than a few degrees can merge or split lines.
For phone photos, use even light without shadows and fill the frame with the page.
Choose both languages for bilingual documents, for example English and Spanish.
Tables and multi-column layouts are read as plain text; check the reading order of those pages.
Scanned PDF to Word, OCR PDF or PDF to Word?
Use this tool when you want to edit the text of a scan. Use OCR PDF when you want to keep the scan exactly as it looks but make it searchable. Use PDF to Word for PDFs that already contain selectable text, such as files exported from Word.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a scanned PDF and a normal PDF?
A normal PDF made from Word or a website stores real text, so it can be converted to Word directly. A scanned PDF stores each page as a picture, so the letters must first be recognized with OCR (optical character recognition). Use this tool for scans and phone photos; use PDF to Word for PDFs whose text you can already select.
Will the Word file keep the original layout?
It keeps the reading order, paragraphs, headings, lists, centered lines and page breaks, which is what you need to edit the text. It does not recreate exact fonts, columns, tables or the position of every element. Tick the page-image option to put each original page below its text for reference.
How accurate is the OCR?
Clean, straight scans of printed text at 300 dpi usually reach 95 to 99 percent word accuracy. Blurry or tilted photos, handwriting, very small or decorative fonts and low contrast lower the accuracy. Words the engine was unsure about are highlighted so you can check them first.
Which languages can it read?
More than 50, including English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Picking the right language matters: the wrong one lowers accuracy noticeably. Language data downloads once and is then cached by your browser.
Is my document uploaded?
No. The PDF is rendered with pdf.js and recognized with the Tesseract OCR engine, both running in your browser. Only the engine and language files are downloaded; your document never leaves your device.
How long does it take?
Typically 3 to 15 seconds per page on a modern computer, depending on the scan quality setting and how much text the page holds. The first run takes longer while the engine and language data download.
Can I convert photos of pages taken with my phone?
Yes. Select several JPG or PNG photos at once; they are processed as pages in file-name order. Shoot straight from above in good light and crop away the background for the best results.
