PDF to PNG
Turn every page of a PDF into a crisp PNG image. Choose the resolution, pick the pages you need, keep a transparent background if you like, and download single images or a ZIP. Your files never leave your device.
A4 page ≈ 1240 × 1754 px
Leave empty for all pages, or tick pages below.
Keeps empty page areas see-through (white is used otherwise).
How to use the PDF to PNG
- Add your PDF by dropping it into the box or clicking to choose one or more files.
- Choose a resolution: 150 DPI suits screens and documents, 300 DPI suits printing.
- Pick the pages with the checkboxes or type a range like 1-3,5.
- Tick Transparent background if you want empty areas to be see-through.
- Press Convert to PNG, then download pages one by one or click Download all as ZIP.
PDF page size in pixels at each DPI
PDF pages are measured in points, where 72 points equal one inch. The pixel size of the PNG is page size in inches × DPI. For example, a US Letter page is 8.5 × 11 inches, so at 150 DPI it becomes 8.5 × 150 = 1275 pixels wide and 11 × 150 = 1650 pixels tall.
| DPI | A4 (210 × 297 mm) | US Letter (8.5 × 11 in) | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 72 | 595 × 842 px | 612 × 792 px | Thumbnails, quick previews |
| 96 | 794 × 1123 px | 816 × 1056 px | Web pages, email |
| 150 | 1240 × 1754 px | 1275 × 1650 px | Reading on screen, slides |
| 200 | 1654 × 2339 px | 1700 × 2200 px | Sharp text, zooming in |
| 300 | 2480 × 3508 px | 2550 × 3300 px | Printing, OCR, archiving |
When a PNG is the right choice
- Text and diagrams: PNG compression is lossless, so letters keep clean edges with no JPEG artifacts.
- Logos and overlays: with a transparent background you can place a PDF logo or chart on any colored slide or web page.
- Screenshots for documentation: a single page as an image is easy to paste into chats, wikis, tickets and presentations.
- Scanned photos: if a page is mostly a photograph, JPG gives much smaller files. Use PDF to JPG for that.
Tips for the best results
- File size grows with the square of the DPI. A 300 DPI page has four times the pixels of a 150 DPI page.
- Very large pages such as posters are scaled down automatically if they would exceed what a browser canvas can hold. The page card tells you when this happens.
- To shrink the PNGs further after converting, run them through the Image Compressor.
- Need the opposite direction? Image to PDF combines PNG or JPG files back into one PDF.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a PDF to PNG for free?
Drop the PDF into the converter above, choose a DPI, select the pages and press Convert to PNG. Each page becomes a separate PNG file you can download on its own or together in a ZIP archive. There is no sign-up and no watermark.
What DPI should I use when converting PDF to PNG?
Use 72 to 96 DPI for quick previews and web pages, 150 DPI for sharp on-screen reading, and 300 DPI for printing or zooming in on fine text. Doubling the DPI doubles the width and height of the image and roughly quadruples the file size.
Can I convert a PDF to PNG with a transparent background?
Yes. Tick Transparent background before converting. Areas of the page that have no content stay transparent in the PNG. If the PDF itself contains a white rectangle or a scanned image, those parts stay opaque because they are part of the page.
Is PNG or JPG better for PDF pages?
PNG is lossless, so text, line art, charts and screenshots stay perfectly sharp, and it supports transparency. JPG makes smaller files for scanned photos and image-heavy pages but adds blur around text. For documents, PNG is usually the better choice.
Can I convert only some pages of a PDF?
Yes. Untick the pages you don't need or type a page range such as 2-4,7. You can also type odd or even. Only the selected pages are converted and added to the ZIP.
Are my PDF files uploaded to a server?
No. The PDF is opened and rendered by your own browser using the pdf.js engine. Your file and the PNG images never leave your device, which also makes the conversion fast for large documents.
Can I convert a password-protected PDF?
If the PDF needs a password to open, the tool asks for it and decrypts the file locally in your browser. Without the correct password the pages cannot be read, so they cannot be converted.
