PDF to EPUB
Turn a text-based PDF into a reflowable EPUB 3 e-book that fits any screen. Broken lines are joined back into paragraphs, headings are detected from font sizes and used to split chapters, and pictures are embedded where they appear. Rename chapters, preview the book, then download the .epub file.

How to use the PDF to EPUB
- Open your PDF by dropping it on the box or clicking to choose it. The conversion starts right away with sensible defaults.
- Check the book details: title and author are read from the PDF properties; correct them and pick the book's language.
- Choose how to split chapters: at the main headings (default), at level 1 and 2 headings, every N pages or as one long chapter, then press Convert to EPUB again.
- Review the table of contents: click a title to rename the chapter and use the preview to read through the result.
- Press Download EPUB and open the file in Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books, Calibre, Thorium or any EPUB reader.
How a fixed PDF becomes a reflowable e-book
A PDF stores every line of text at an exact position on a fixed page. An EPUB is a ZIP archive of small XHTML web pages plus a package file that lists the chapters, so the reading app can re-wrap the text for any screen. The converter bridges the two by reconstructing the document structure from the PDF layout:
| In the EPUB | How it is recognized in the PDF |
|---|---|
Paragraphs (<p>) | Lines are joined while the spacing stays normal; a larger vertical gap, a first-line indent after a finished sentence, or a short last line ending in a full stop starts a new paragraph. Paragraphs cut by a page break are joined again. |
Headings (<h1>–<h4>) | Font size at least about 15% larger than the body text (largest = highest level), or a short, all-bold line standing on its own |
| Chapters (separate XHTML files) | A new file starts at each heading of the chosen split level, or every N pages |
Lists (<ul>, <ol>) | Lines starting with •, ▪, –, * or 1. 2) a.; indented follow-on lines stay in the same item |
Images (<figure>) | Image objects painted on the page, extracted with their original pixels and inserted above the first line that follows them |
| Removed | Page numbers and lines that repeat at the top or bottom of many pages (running headers and footers) |
| Table of contents | Chapter titles plus their next-level headings, written to nav.xhtml (EPUB 3) and toc.ncx (EPUB 2 readers) |
What is inside the EPUB file
| File | Purpose |
|---|---|
mimetype | The text application/epub+zip, stored uncompressed as the first file so readers can identify the format |
META-INF/container.xml | Points to the package document |
OEBPS/content.opf | Metadata (title, author, language, unique ID, modified date), the manifest of every file and the spine (reading order) |
OEBPS/nav.xhtml, toc.ncx | The clickable table of contents |
OEBPS/text/ch001.xhtml … | One XHTML file per chapter, sharing one stylesheet (styles/book.css) |
OEBPS/images/ | The cover and embedded pictures as JPEG, or PNG when they have transparency |
Tips for a clean e-book
- Best sources: novels, reports, manuals and articles exported from Word, Google Docs, InDesign or LaTeX. They have a real text layer and consistent heading sizes.
- Too many chapters? Your PDF probably uses large type for things that are not chapters. Choose One chapter or Every N pages, or rename and keep the ones you want.
- Chapters missing? If the chapter titles are the same size as the body text but bold, they are still found as minor headings; choose At headings of level 1 and 2 to split on them.
- Two-column layouts are read in the order the PDF stores the text, which is usually column by column. Academic papers with complex figures may need manual tidying.
- Convert a part of a long PDF with the Pages box, for example
15-120to skip the front matter and index. - Want the opposite direction? Use EPUB to PDF. To read the result in your browser, open it in the EPUB Reader.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a PDF to EPUB?
Open the PDF on this page. The tool reads the text and layout with pdf.js, rebuilds paragraphs and headings, splits the book into chapters and shows a preview. Fix the title, author or chapter names if needed, then press Download EPUB. It is free and needs no account.
Why convert a PDF to EPUB at all?
A PDF has fixed pages, so on a phone or 6-inch e-reader you have to zoom and pan. An EPUB is reflowable: the text wraps to the screen and you can change the font size, font and margins in your reading app. Long text documents, reports and novels are much easier to read that way.
How are chapters detected?
The converter finds the font size of the main body text. Lines set noticeably larger become headings, the largest sizes being the top levels. In Auto mode the first heading level that is used at least twice starts a new chapter, so a single big title on page 1 is not treated as a chapter. If the PDF has no headings you can split every N pages instead.
Are images from the PDF included?
Yes, when Embed images is on. Photos and illustrations are taken from the PDF at their original resolution (capped at 1600 pixels) and placed at the point where they appear in the text. Small icons and logos repeated on every page are skipped. Pages without any text, such as scans, are added as full-page images.
Will the EPUB look exactly like my PDF?
No, and that is the point of a reflowable book. The text, paragraphs, headings, lists, bold, italics and pictures are kept, but the exact page layout, fonts, columns and positioning are not. Tables are converted as plain text lines, and complex magazine layouts or forms may need tidying afterwards, for example in Calibre or Sigil.
Can I convert a scanned PDF to an EPUB with real text?
Not directly. A scanned PDF only contains pictures of pages, so there is no text to reflow. This tool keeps those pages as images so you still get a readable EPUB; to get editable text, run the PDF through OCR (optical character recognition) first and then convert it here.
Does the EPUB work on Kindle?
Current Kindle apps and devices accept EPUB files sent through Amazon's Send to Kindle service, which converts them for you. Kobo, Apple Books, Google Play Books, PocketBook, Nook, Calibre and Thorium open the EPUB directly. The PDF is never uploaded by this page; conversion happens in your browser.
