Paste one item per line to shuffle your list into a random order, draw a few random winners or split everyone into even teams. Every shuffle uses your browser's cryptographic random number generator for a fair, unbiased result.

How to use the List Randomizer
Paste your list with one item per line (or choose commas as the separator).
Choose a mode: Shuffle list, Pick random items or Make teams.
Set the options: how many items to pick, how many teams or people per team, and whether to remove blanks and duplicates.
Click the button (Shuffle, Pick or Make teams). Press it again for a new random result.
Copy or download the result as text or CSV.
How the shuffle works
The randomizer uses the Fisher-Yates shuffle: starting from the last item, it swaps each item with a randomly chosen item at or before its position. With a fair random number source this produces every possible order with exactly the same probability, 1 in n! (n factorial) for a list of n items. A list of just 10 names already has 3,628,800 possible orders.
The random numbers come from crypto.getRandomValues, the same secure generator browsers use for encryption keys. Numbers that would make some positions slightly more likely than others are thrown away and drawn again (rejection sampling), so there is no modulo bias. Picking items uses the same method and stops after the number of draws you asked for, so an item can never be picked twice in one draw.
Shuffle, pick or make teams: which to use
Mode
What it does
Good for
Shuffle list
Puts every item in a new random order
Presentation order, seating plans, playlists, study questions
Pick random items
Draws 1 or more items with no repeats
Giveaway winners, who goes first, picking a task or a restaurant
Make teams
Shuffles, then deals items into teams of even size
Classroom groups, sports teams, project pairs, tournament draws
Tip: for a giveaway, turn on Remove duplicates so a person who entered twice only has one chance, and turn on Remove picked items to draw runner-up prizes from the people who are left.
Frequently asked questions
Is this list randomizer truly random?
It uses crypto.getRandomValues, the cryptographically secure random number generator built into your browser, with rejection sampling so every position is equally likely. The shuffle is the Fisher-Yates algorithm, which gives every possible order exactly the same probability.
How do I randomize a list of names?
Paste the names with one name per line, keep the Shuffle list mode and click Shuffle list. The names appear in a new random order that you can copy, download or shuffle again.
Can I pick a random winner from a list?
Yes. Switch to Pick random items, enter how many winners you need and click Pick. Each item can only be picked once per draw, and you can remove the winners from the list for the next round.
How are teams balanced?
The list is shuffled first, then people are dealt to the teams one by one like cards, so team sizes never differ by more than one. You can ask for a number of teams or for a number of people per team.
What happens to duplicate or empty lines?
Blank lines and extra spaces are removed by default. Turn on Remove duplicates if the same entry appears more than once and should only count once; matching ignores upper and lower case.
How many items can I shuffle?
Lists with hundreds of thousands of lines shuffle in a fraction of a second, since everything runs locally in your browser.
Is my list uploaded?
No. The randomizer runs entirely in your browser. Your list is only saved in your own browser's local storage so it is still there when you come back.
