How 6 months from a date is calculated
To add six calendar months, add 6 to the month number and keep the day. When the total is more than 12, subtract 12 and move to the next year: from October 24, 2026, month 10 + 6 = 16, which is month 4 of 2027, so the result is April 24, 2027. Counting back to six months ago subtracts 6 instead, borrowing a year when needed. Spreadsheets do the same with =EDATE(date, 6).
Starts late in the month need a rule because the target month can be shorter. For six months this affects March 31, May 31, October 31 and December 31 (all land on a 30-day month) and August 29 to 31 (which land in February). The standard approach uses the last day of the shorter month, so March 31 + 6 months = September 30 and December 31 + 6 months = June 30. Choose the month-end option if your agreement ties month-end to month-end, or the roll-over option to carry the missing days into the following month.

Tips for half-year dates
Passport validity: many countries ask that a passport be valid for at least six months beyond your stay. Enter your return date to see the earliest expiry date that passes that test, and always confirm the current entry rules for your destination.
Semiannual schedules: insurance renewals, six-month leases, car maintenance intervals and twice-yearly reviews usually fall on the same day number six months later.
Six months vs 26 weeks: a 26-week period always ends on the same weekday it started, while six calendar months ends on the same date number. Use whichever your schedule or contract actually names.
Seasons flip: six months from a date in winter lands in summer, which helps when planning seasonal tasks like garden prep or switching wardrobes.
Business-day counts skip weekends and, when ticked, the 11 US federal holidays on their observed dates. State, school and company holidays are not included.
Frequently asked questions
What is the date 6 months from today?
It is shown at the top of the results, based on today's date on your device. Six months later keeps the same day number in the month six months ahead, so the 24th of October becomes the 24th of April. If the day does not exist in that month, the last day of the month is used.
How many days is 6 months?
Six calendar months contain 181 to 184 days. Spans that include February are the shortest: January 1 to July 1 is 181 days (182 in a leap year). Spans from March, May, July or August through the summer or winter, which avoid February, are 184 days.
Is 6 months the same as 180 days?
No, 180 days is always one to four days shorter than six calendar months. From January 1, 180 days is June 30 (June 29 in a leap year) while six months is July 1. Rules that say 180 days should be counted in days, not months.
What is 6 months from August 31?
With the standard end-of-month rule it is February 28, or February 29 when the next February is in a leap year, because February never has a 31st. The same applies to starts on August 29 and 30 in years with a 28-day February. Excel and Google Sheets give the same result with =EDATE(date, 6).
How many weeks is 6 months?
Six months are about 26 weeks: 181 days is 25 weeks and 6 days, 182 days is exactly 26 weeks and 184 days is 26 weeks and 2 days. So 26 weeks from today is close to, but not always the same as, six months from today.
How many business days are in 6 months?
A six-month span holds 129 to 132 weekdays. Removing the three to seven US federal holidays that fall in a half year leaves roughly 122 to 129 working days; the calculator shows the exact figure for your dates.
Is 6 months from today the same weekday?
Only when the span is exactly 182 days. Otherwise the weekday shifts by one day back, or one or two days forward, depending on how many 31-day months and which February fall in between.
