US full retirement age by birth year
The Social Security full retirement age (FRA) is the age at which you can claim your full, unreduced benefit. It was raised gradually by the 1983 Social Security amendments:
| Year of birth | Full retirement age | Year of birth | Full retirement age |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1937 or earlier | 65 | 1955 | 66 and 2 months |
| 1938 | 65 and 2 months | 1956 | 66 and 4 months |
| 1939 | 65 and 4 months | 1957 | 66 and 6 months |
| 1940 | 65 and 6 months | 1958 | 66 and 8 months |
| 1941 | 65 and 8 months | 1959 | 66 and 10 months |
| 1942 | 65 and 10 months | 1960 and later | 67 |
| 1943–1954 | 66 |
If you were born on January 1, use the previous year's row: Social Security treats you as reaching an age on the day before your birthday. Early benefits can start at 62 with a permanent reduction, and waiting past your FRA earns delayed retirement credits up to age 70. Source: Social Security Administration, "Normal Retirement Age".
How the date is calculated
Retirement date = birth date + age in years and months, keeping the same day of the month. Days are never approximated as 365.25 per year, so the result is exact.
- Born May 10, 1958, FRA 66 years 8 months: 1958 + 66 = 2024, May + 8 months = January 2025, so January 10, 2025.
- Born August 31, 1961, retiring at 66 years 6 months: the target is February 2028, which has 29 days, so the date is February 29, 2028 (or March 1 with the "1st of the next month" rule).
- Born February 29, 1960, retiring at 67: 2027 is not a leap year, so the date is February 28, 2027 or March 1, 2027.
The countdown in years, months and days steps forward in whole calendar months from the start date, then counts the remaining days. Working days count every Monday to Friday up to the day before the retirement date, without subtracting public holidays.
Planning around your retirement date
- Benefits often start the month after you reach the age, so a birthday late in a month can mean waiting until the 1st of the next month.
- Check your pension plan's rules: some use your birthday, others the end of the month or quarter.
- Medicare eligibility in the US starts at 65 regardless of your full retirement age; enrollment opens three months before the month you turn 65.
- Compare a few ages in the table: every extra year can change your benefit and how long your savings need to last.
Frequently asked questions
What is my full retirement age in the US?
It depends on your birth year: 65 for people born in 1937 or earlier, rising by two months per year to 66 for 1943 to 1954, then by two months per year again to 67 for anyone born in 1960 or later. Press US full retirement age to fill it in for your birth date.
Why does being born on January 1 change the result?
The Social Security Administration considers you to reach an age on the day before your birthday, so someone born on January 1 is treated as born in the previous year when the full retirement age is looked up.
How is a retirement age like 66 and 8 months turned into a date?
The tool adds the years and months to your birth date and keeps the same day of the month. Born May 10, 1958 plus 66 years and 8 months is January 10, 2025.
What happens if I was born on the 31st or on February 29?
If the target month is shorter, the default is the last day of that month, for example August 31 plus 66 years 6 months is February 28 or 29. You can switch to the first day of the next month instead. February 29 birthdays become February 28 or March 1 in common years.
Does this tell me when I can claim Social Security or a pension?
It gives the calendar date you reach an age. Benefits usually start from the first full month after you reach the age, and rules differ by plan and country, so check with your pension provider or the SSA. This is an estimate only.
How are working days counted?
Every Monday to Friday from the as-of date up to the day before retirement is counted. Public holidays and vacation are not subtracted.
