Common sobriety milestones
Many recovery communities mark progress with chips, coins or tokens at regular milestones. The exact set varies by group, but these are the ones most people celebrate:
Milestone
How it is counted
Why it matters to many people
24 hours
Sober date + 1 day
The first full day, often the hardest step.
30 days
Sober date + 30 days
A first month of new routines.
60 days
Sober date + 60 days
Habits are becoming more familiar.
90 days
Sober date + 90 days
A widely recognized early-recovery goal.
6 and 9 months
Calendar months after the sober date
Half a year and three quarters of a year of steady change.
1 year
Same date, one year later
The first sobriety anniversary.
18 months, then every year
Calendar months / years
Yearly anniversaries keep the journey visible.
How the counter works
days sober = count-up date − sober date. Week and year figures divide that number by 7 and 365.25. The years, months and days line counts whole calendar months first (adjusting for short months, so a sober date of the 31st lands on the last day of shorter months) and then the leftover days.
Ideas for using your count
Put the next milestone date in your calendar and plan something small to celebrate it.
Turn the money-saved figure into a goal: a trip, a gift or a savings account.
Write down one thing that is better today than on day one; the list grows with the count.
A setback does not erase what you have learned. Many people simply start a new count and keep going.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate how many days sober I am?
Subtract your sober date from today's date. If your sober date was January 1 and today is January 31, you have 30 days. This calculator counts calendar days, so your sober date itself is day zero and you reach 1 day sober the next morning, which is how most recovery groups count.
What is a sober date?
Your sober date (also called a sobriety date or clean date) is the first full day you did not drink or use. Many people keep the same date for good and celebrate it as an anniversary each year.
When is my 90-day milestone?
Add 90 days to your sober date. The milestone table in the results lists the exact date for 90 days and every other common milestone, so you can plan a celebration or a meeting.
How are months and years counted?
Monthly milestones use calendar months, so 6 months from March 15 is September 15. The years, months and days breakdown works the same way. The decimal months figure divides days by 30.44, the average month length.
How is the money saved worked out?
Your usual spending is converted to a daily amount (weekly ÷ 7 or monthly × 12 ÷ 365.25) and multiplied by your days sober. It is an estimate, but seeing the total can be a strong motivator.

Where can I find support?
In the US, the SAMHSA National Helpline at 1-800-662-4357 is free, confidential and open 24 hours a day, every day, for treatment referrals and information. Local mutual-support groups and your doctor are also good places to start.
