How the date of Easter is set
Easter is a moveable feast tied to the moon. The rule used by Western churches is: Easter is the first Sunday after the Paschal full moon, which is the first ecclesiastical full moon falling on or after March 21. The church does not use the real astronomical moon; it uses tables built on the 19-year Metonic cycle, in which lunar phases repeat on almost the same calendar dates. Working out the date from those tables is called the computus.
Earliest possible Western Easter: March 22 (last in 1818, next in 2285).
Latest possible Western Easter: April 25 (last in 1943, next in 2038).
Lent: Ash Wednesday is 46 days before Easter: 40 days of fasting plus the six Sundays, which are not counted.
Pentecost is the seventh Sunday after Easter (49 days later) and Ascension is the Thursday 39 days after Easter.
Why Orthodox Easter is often later
Eastern Orthodox churches apply the same basic rule but compute it with the older Julian calendar and the original lunar tables. The Julian calendar is currently 13 days behind the Gregorian one, and its lunar tables have drifted a few days from the real moon. As a result, across 1900–2099 Orthodox Easter falls on the same Sunday as Western Easter in about 3 years out of 10 (for example 2025, 2028, 2031, 2034), one week later in about 45% of years, and four or five weeks later in the rest (2027, 2032, 2035). In the Gregorian calendar it can fall from April 4 to May 8 in the 1900–2099 period.
The calculator uses the anonymous Gregorian algorithm (also known as the Meeus/Jones/Butcher algorithm) for Western Easter and Meeus’s Julian algorithm for Orthodox Easter, valid for the years 1583–4099.
Frequently asked questions
How is the date of Easter determined?
Western churches celebrate Easter on the first Sunday after the Paschal full moon, the first ecclesiastical full moon on or after March 21. The full moon comes from church tables based on the 19-year Metonic cycle rather than from astronomical observation, so the date can differ from a simple lunar calendar.
What is the earliest and latest date Easter can be?
Western Easter can fall between March 22 and April 25. The last March 22 Easter was in 1818 and the next is in 2285; the next April 25 Easter is in 2038. Orthodox Easter falls between April 4 and May 8 on the Gregorian calendar during 1900–2099.
Why do Orthodox and Western Easter fall on different dates?
Orthodox churches compute Easter with the Julian calendar and the older lunar tables, while Western churches use the Gregorian reform of 1582. The two dates match in about 3 years out of 10, and otherwise Orthodox Easter is one, four or five weeks later.
How many days before Easter is Ash Wednesday?
Ash Wednesday is 46 days before Easter Sunday. Lent has 40 fasting days, and the six Sundays in between are not counted, which adds up to 46 calendar days.
When is Pentecost?
Pentecost is 49 days after Easter, on the seventh Sunday after Easter Sunday, counted as the 50th day when Easter itself is day one. Ascension Day is 39 days after Easter, always on a Thursday.
What algorithm does this calculator use?
Western Easter uses the anonymous Gregorian algorithm published in 1876 and popularized by Jean Meeus, and Orthodox Easter uses Meeus’s Julian algorithm with the Julian-to-Gregorian day offset. Both are exact for the years 1583 to 4099.
