How the calculator works
It finds the range that contains your birth year and divides that range into thirds to tell you if you are an early, middle or late member. If you were born in the first or last two years of a range, you are flagged as a cusper. Your age in a given year is simply year − birth year. Micro-generations are listed when your birth year falls inside them: Generation Jones (about 1954–1965), Xennials (about 1977–1983) and Zillennials (about 1993–1998).
Frequently asked questions
What generation am I if I was born in 1996?
Under Pew Research Center's definitions, 1996 is the last Millennial birth year (1981–1996). Under McCrindle's ranges, 1996 is Generation Z (1995–2009). Many people born around 1993–1998 also call themselves Zillennials.
What years are Gen Z?
Pew Research Center defines Generation Z as people born from 1997 to 2012. McCrindle uses 1995 to 2009. Generation Alpha follows, usually defined as 2010 or 2013 to 2024.
What years are Millennials and Gen X?
Pew defines Millennials as born 1981–1996 and Generation X as 1965–1980. Baby Boomers were born 1946–1964, the span used by almost every source because it matches the post-war birth boom.
Why do different sources give different years?
Generations are not official categories. Researchers draw the lines around shared formative events and technology, so the boundaries differ by a year or a few. Only the Baby Boom has a clear demographic definition.
What is a cusper?
A cusper is someone born near the boundary between two generations, usually within a year or two of the cut-off. Cuspers often share traits and experiences with both groups.
What comes after Generation Alpha?
Generation Beta, a name proposed by McCrindle for people born from 2025 to about 2039.
