How to use the Date to Roman Numerals
Pick the date you want to convert.
Choose the order: US month-first, day-first, ISO or a short two-digit year.
Choose a separator and whether you want spaces around it.
Press Convert date and check the breakdown of day, month and year.
Copy the result and double-check it before it goes on skin or metal.
How dates are converted
Each part of the date is converted on its own using the standard subtractive Roman numeral rules, then joined with your separator. The symbols are I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1000. A smaller symbol before a larger one is subtracted: IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, XC = 90, CD = 400, CM = 900.
Before a tattoo or engraving, check the result digit by digit; a missing I changes the date.
Frequently asked questions
How do I write a date in Roman numerals?
Convert the day, month and year separately and join them with a separator. For example, July 4, 1996 in MM.DD.YYYY is VII.IV.MCMXCVI: 7 = VII, 4 = IV and 1996 = MCMXCVI (1000 + 900 + 90 + 6).
Should I use MM.DD.YYYY or DD.MM.YYYY?
Use the order people where you live will read correctly. The United States usually writes month first, while most of Europe, Latin America and many other countries write the day first. For a tattoo, choose the order that feels natural to you.
How do you write 2000 and later years?
2000 is MM, 2010 is MMX, 2020 is MMXX, 2024 is MMXXIV and 2026 is MMXXVI. The thousands are M, then the rest of the number is added in the usual way.
Can I use a two-digit year?
Yes, for example 12.25.24 becomes XII.XXV.XXIV. A year ending in 00 cannot be written as a two-digit Roman numeral because Roman numerals have no zero, so use the full year then.
What is the largest year Roman numerals can show?
Standard Roman numerals go up to 3,999 (MMMCMXCIX). Larger numbers need a bar over a numeral to multiply it by 1,000, which is rarely used for dates.
Are lowercase Roman numerals correct?
Yes. Lowercase numerals such as xii.v.mmxxvi are used in some designs and in book page numbering. They have the same values; it is a matter of style.
