Type an age to see the year that person was born. Say whether the birthday has already happened this year for an exact answer, or use an age on a past or future date. Then see how old you are (or will be) in every year.

The birth year formula
Your age goes up by one on each birthday, so the year you were born depends on two things: your age and whether this year's birthday has happened yet.
Situation
Formula
Example (age 30, in 2026)
Birthday already happened this year
Birth year = current year − age
2026 − 30 = 1996
Birthday still to come this year
Birth year = current year − age − 1
2026 − 30 − 1 = 1995

1995 or 1996

Handy uses
Genealogy: census returns and ship manifests often record an age instead of a birth date. Enter that age and the record date to get the possible birth window to search.
Forms and quizzes: check what year someone of a given age was born, for example when verifying an age-based eligibility rule.
Planning ahead: the age table shows how old you will be at a future date, such as a graduation, a retirement year or a big anniversary.
Frequently asked questions
How do I work out what year I was born from my age?
Subtract your age from the current year. If your birthday has not happened yet this year, subtract one more. For example, in 2026 a 30-year-old whose birthday has passed was born in 1996, and one whose birthday is still to come was born in 1995.
Why can an age give two possible birth years?
Your age only changes on your birthday, so in any calendar year people of the same age were born across two different years: those who already had their birthday and those who have not. Knowing whether the birthday has passed narrows it to one year.
What year were you born if you are 18 today?
In 2026, an 18-year-old was born in 2008 if their birthday has already passed this year, or in 2007 if it has not. The calculator always uses today's date from your device, so the answer stays correct in future years.
How do I find the birth year from an age on an old document?
Use the Age on a specific date mode. If someone was 25 on June 1, 1990, they were born between June 2, 1964 and June 1, 1965. The tool shows that full date range and both possible years, which is useful for genealogy and census records.
How old will I be in a certain year?
Subtract your birth year from that year. That gives your age on your birthday in that year; before your birthday you are one year younger. The age-in-year table lists both figures for every year of your life.
What generation is my birth year?
Commonly used ranges (based on Pew Research Center definitions) are: Silent Generation 1928–1945, Baby Boomers 1946–1964, Generation X 1965–1980, Millennials 1981–1996, Generation Z 1997–2012, and Generation Alpha from 2013 onward. The boundaries are conventions, not official cutoffs.
