- Press Calculate to see the date, the countdown and the upcoming half birthdays.
How a half birthday is calculated
The usual rule is simply half birthday = birthday + 6 months, keeping the same day of the month. Born on April 12? Your half birthday is October 12.
The only tricky cases are birthdays on the 29th, 30th or 31st, because six months later the month may be shorter. The calculator then uses the last day of that month by default, or the 1st of the following month if you prefer:
| Birthday | Half birthday (last day of month) | Half birthday (1st of next month) |
|---|---|---|
| August 29 | February 28 (Feb 29 in leap years) | March 1 (Feb 29 in leap years) |
| August 30 | February 28 or 29 | March 1 |
| August 31 | February 28 or 29 | March 1 |
| March 31 | September 30 | October 1 |
| May 31 | November 30 | December 1 |
| October 31 | April 30 | May 1 |
| December 31 | June 30 | July 1 |
| February 29 | August 29 | August 29 |
The exact midpoint method
Adding six months does not split the year into two equal halves: from January 1 to July 1 is 181 days, while from July 1 to the next January 1 is 184 days. If you want the true middle, the midpoint method counts the days from one birthday to the next (365, or 366 when a February 29 falls in between) and adds half of them, rounded down:
half birthday = birthday + ⌊days until next birthday ÷ 2⌋
Example: born January 1. From January 1, 2027 to January 1, 2028 is 365 days, half is 182.5, so the midpoint half birthday is 182 days later on July 2, 2027, one day after the usual July 1.
Half birthday ideas
- Kids with summer or holiday birthdays often celebrate their half birthday at school instead, when classmates are around.
- Bake half a cake, sing half the song, or open half the presents, a classic family tradition.
- Toddlers: ages like 1½ and 2½ are popular milestones for photos and growth checks.
- Christmas, New Year and Valentine's babies get a second, less crowded day to celebrate.
Frequently asked questions
What is a half birthday?
A half birthday is the day you are exactly half a year older than on your birthday, so six months after it. Someone born on March 10 has a half birthday on September 10. Families often celebrate it for children, or for people whose birthday falls on a holiday.
When is the half birthday if I was born on August 31?
Six months after August 31 is February, which has no 31st. The usual rule is to use the last day of the month, so the half birthday is February 28, or February 29 in a leap year. You can switch to 'first day of the next month' to use March 1 instead.
What about a February 29 birthday?
Six months after February 29 is August 29, which exists every year, so leap-day babies have a half birthday on August 29 every year, even though their real birthday only appears every four years.
Is a half birthday exactly 182 days after my birthday?
Not always. With the 'same day six months later' method the gap is 181 to 184 days, depending on which months it spans. The midpoint method splits the year into two equal halves of 182 or 183 days instead.
Which method should I use?
Most people simply add six months, which is the default. The midpoint method is a fun alternative if you want the exact middle of your birthday year.
Is my birth date stored or sent anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
