How to use the Moving Checklist Generator
Pick your moving date.
Tell it about the move: renting or owning on each end, and whether you hire movers, rent a truck or use a container.
Tick what applies: long-distance, kids, pets or a car to ship.
Work through the list week by week and tick tasks off; overdue and due-this-week tasks are highlighted.
Print it or export it to your calendar so reminders arrive on the right days.

How the checklist adapts to your move
Renting: adds lease notice, the move-out inspection, returning keys, renters insurance and a forwarding address for your deposit.
Owning: adds closing dates, the final walk-through, homeowners insurance and handing over keys, manuals and warranties.
Movers, truck or container: quotes and confirmations for movers, truck reservation and helpers for DIY, delivery and parking for containers.
Long-distance: route planning, checking interstate movers, a car service and new-state license and registration.
Kids and pets: school records and enrollment, childcare on moving day, vet records, microchip updates and a pet kit.
Tips for a smoother move
Pack heavy things such as books in small boxes and light, bulky things in large ones.
Photograph the back of the TV and computer before unplugging so reconnecting is easy.
Take dated photos of the empty old home and the new one on arrival; they help with deposits and damage claims.
How far in advance should I start planning a move?
About 8 weeks is a comfortable window for most household moves. It gives time to compare movers, give notice on a lease, sort belongings and schedule utilities. Long-distance moves and moves in the busy summer season benefit from starting even earlier.
What should I do first when moving?
Fix the date, set a budget and book the move itself: get several quotes from movers or reserve a truck or container. If you rent, check your lease for the notice period and give written notice. Then start decluttering, which reduces how much you pay to move.
When should I change my address?
Submit a mail forwarding request about 2 to 4 weeks before the move with the moving date as the start date. Update banks, employer, insurance and subscriptions around the same time, and the driver license and vehicle registration after you arrive, following your state's deadline.
When should I set up utilities at the new home?
Call 2 to 4 weeks ahead. Ask for power, water and gas to start the day before you arrive and for service at the old home to stop the day after you leave, so you are never without lights or water on moving day. Internet installation often needs the most notice.
What goes in a moving essentials box?
Everything you need for the first night and morning: phone chargers, medications, toiletries, toilet paper, a change of clothes, bed sheets and towels, basic tools, a box cutter, paper plates, snacks, pet food and important documents. Keep it with you, not on the truck.
My move is only a few weeks away. Will the list still work?
Yes. With Fit tasks into the time I have left switched on, tasks that would already be overdue are spread evenly between today and a few days before the move, in their original order, so the list stays realistic.
Is my checklist saved?
