How the fiscal year, quarter and period are worked out
Given a start month M and start day D, the fiscal year that contains a date is the one that started on the latest M/D on or before that date, and it ends the day before the next M/D. Then:
Fiscal period = number of whole months since the fiscal year start + 1 (P1 to P12).
Fiscal quarter = ⌊(period − 1) ÷ 3⌋ + 1, so P1–P3 are Q1, P4–P6 Q2 and so on.
Day of fiscal year = date − fiscal year start + 1; fiscal week (7-day method) = ⌊(day − 1) ÷ 7⌋ + 1.
Example: with an October 1 start, July 15, 2026 is in FY2026 (Oct 1, 2025 – Sep 30, 2026), period P10 and quarter Q4.

Frequently asked questions
What is a fiscal year?
A fiscal year is the 12-month period an organization uses for budgeting and financial reporting. It can match the calendar year (January 1 to December 31) or start in any other month, such as October 1 for the US federal government or April 1 for the governments of India, Japan, Canada and the UK.
How are fiscal years named?
Most US organizations name the fiscal year by the calendar year in which it ends: the US federal FY2027 runs from October 1, 2026 to September 30, 2027. Japan names it by the start year, and the UK, India and Australia often write both years, such as 2026–27.
What fiscal quarter is it?
Fiscal Q1 is the first three months after the fiscal year start. With an October 1 start, Q1 is October to December, Q2 January to March, Q3 April to June and Q4 July to September. Enter today's date and your start month to see the current fiscal quarter.
How is the fiscal week calculated?
There is no single standard. This calculator offers two common methods: counting 7-day blocks from the first day of the fiscal year (day 1 to 7 is week 1), or calendar weeks starting Monday or Sunday where week 1 is the week that contains the fiscal year start. A year then has 53 weeks or a short final week.
When does the UK tax year start?
The UK personal tax year runs from April 6 to April 5 of the following year, while the UK government's financial year runs from April 1 to March 31. Use the UK tax year preset for April 6.
Does this handle 4-4-5 retail calendars?
No. Retail 4-4-5 or 52/53-week calendars end on a fixed weekday, so their periods are 4 or 5 weeks long instead of calendar months. This calculator uses calendar-month periods, which is what most governments and companies use.
