Flip the frame order of any animated GIF so it plays backwards, or turn it into a smooth boomerang that plays forward and then back. Colors, frame timing and transparency are kept, and everything happens in your browser.

How to use the Reverse GIF
Add your GIF by dropping it into the box, choosing it from your device or pasting it with Ctrl+V. Or press Try a sample GIF.
Pick a mode: Reverse plays the frames backwards, Boomerang plays forward and then backward.
Adjust speed and looping if you like. The preview updates instantly.
Press Reverse GIF (or Create boomerang GIF). The new animation is encoded in a second or two.
Download the GIF, or press Use as new input to keep editing it.
Reverse vs. boomerang: what changes
For an animation with frames 1 to 6, the three modes produce these sequences:
Mode
Frame order
Frames
Typical use
Reverse
6 5 4 3 2 1
same as original
Rewind effects, funny "un-doing" clips
Boomerang
1 2 3 4 5 6 5 4 3 2
2n − 2
Seamless loops, reaction GIFs, product spins
Reverse boomerang
6 5 4 3 2 1 2 3 4 5
2n − 2
Same loop, starting from the end
With "Don't repeat the turn-around frames" switched off, the first and last frames appear twice (2n frames), which creates a short hold at each end.
How the reversal works
A GIF stores frames as patches drawn over each other: a frame may contain only the pixels that changed, plus a disposal method that says what to do with it before the next frame. Reversing those stored patches directly would produce smeared or broken images. This tool therefore:
Decodes every frame and rebuilds the full picture exactly as a browser shows it.
Re-orders the full frames, keeping each frame's own delay (so a pause at the end of the original becomes a pause at the start of the reversed GIF).
Re-encodes the animation: if the GIF uses 255 colors or fewer, the exact palette is reused (lossless); only changed rectangles are stored and unchanged pixels are made transparent, which keeps the file compact.
Speed and frame delays
GIF delays are stored in hundredths of a second. At 2× speed a 100 ms frame becomes 50 ms. Delays are never set below 20 ms, because most browsers play anything shorter (0 or 10 ms) at a slow 100 ms. To reverse a video clip rather than a GIF, use the Video Reverser; to turn a video into a GIF first, use the GIF Maker.
Frequently asked questions
How do I reverse a GIF?
Drop the GIF into the tool above, keep the mode on Reverse and press Reverse GIF. The tool reads every frame, puts them in the opposite order with their original delays, and gives you a new GIF to download.
What is a boomerang GIF?
A boomerang GIF plays the animation forward and then backward, so it loops smoothly without a visible jump. With the turn-around option on, the first and last frames are not shown twice, which avoids a small pause at each end.
Will reversing a GIF lower its quality?
No. Reversing only changes the order of the frames. When the GIF uses 256 colors or fewer in total, which is the normal case, the exact same colors are written back, so every pixel is identical to the original.
Why do some reversed GIFs look broken in other tools?
Many GIFs are optimized so each frame only stores what changed since the previous one. Simply reversing the stored pieces breaks the picture. This tool first rebuilds every full frame, then reverses those, and finally optimizes the new animation again.
Does the reversed GIF keep transparency?
Yes. Transparent pixels stay transparent. The encoder also handles frames where something disappears, so transparent areas are cleared correctly while the animation plays.
Is my GIF uploaded to a server?
No. The GIF is decoded, reversed and encoded by JavaScript in your browser. It never leaves your device, and the tool keeps working offline once the page is loaded.
Why is the boomerang GIF bigger than the original?
A boomerang contains almost twice as many frames, so the file is usually 1.5 to 2 times larger. Use the Resize GIF tool to make it smaller if needed.
