Memory tricks that work
Group by sound: Kingston (Jamaica) and Kingstown (Saint Vincent); Georgetown (Guyana) and St. George's (Grenada).
Same name as the country: Singapore, Monaco, San Marino, Luxembourg, Djibouti, Kuwait City, Panama City, Guatemala City, Mexico City and Vatican City.
Look for patterns: the "-stan" countries of Central Asia have capitals ending in a hard sound: Astana, Bishkek, Dushanbe, Ashgabat, Tashkent.
Use spaced repetition: replay your missed answers right after each round, then again the next day.
Frequently asked questions
How many countries are in the quiz?
196: the 193 member states of the United Nations plus Vatican City, Kosovo and Taiwan. You can play all of them at once or one region at a time.
Which countries have more than one capital?
Bolivia (Sucre is the constitutional capital, La Paz the seat of government), South Africa (Pretoria, Cape Town and Bloemfontein), Eswatini (Mbabane and Lobamba), Benin (Porto-Novo and Cotonou) and Sri Lanka (Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte and Colombo). In type-in mode any of them is accepted.
Do I need to type accents and exact spelling?
No. Accents, capital letters, hyphens and apostrophes are ignored, so Bogota, Brasilia and Reykjavik are accepted. One wrong letter is forgiven in names of five letters or more, and two in long names, and common alternatives such as Kiev, Peking or Nur-Sultan also count.
Why is the capital not the biggest city?
Many countries chose or built a capital for political balance or a central location. Canberra (not Sydney), Ottawa (not Toronto), Brasília (not São Paulo), Ankara (not Istanbul), Abuja (not Lagos) and Washington, D.C. (not New York) are famous examples.
What is the capital of the Netherlands?
Amsterdam is the capital under the Dutch constitution, but the government, parliament and supreme court sit in The Hague. That is why it is one of the most commonly missed questions in capitals quizzes.
How can I learn all the world capitals faster?
Learn one region at a time, starting with multiple choice and moving to type-in once you score above 80%. Replay your missed answers right away, and use memory hooks for the tricky ones, for example Canberra for Australia or Bern for Switzerland.
Is my score saved?
