How to convert a percent to a decimal
"Percent" means "per hundred", so a percentage is a number of hundredths. To turn it into a decimal, divide by 100:
decimal = percent ÷ 100
Dividing by 100 moves the decimal point two places to the left. If the number has fewer than two digits before the point, fill the gap with zeros: 7% → 0.07, 0.4% → 0.004. A whole number such as 85 has an invisible decimal point at the end (85.), so 85% → 0.85.
Fractions of a percent: 3/4% = 0.75% = 0.0075. Convert the fraction first, then divide by 100.
Negative percentages (a decrease) stay negative: −15% = −0.15.

Where percent-to-decimal conversion matters
Interest and loan formulas expect the rate as a decimal: a 6.5% annual rate is r = 0.065, and a monthly rate is 0.065 ÷ 12 ≈ 0.005417.
Sales tax and discounts: multiply the price by the decimal. 8.25% tax on $40 is 40 × 0.0825 = $3.30; to add it in one step multiply by 1.0825.
Spreadsheets: a cell formatted as a percentage that shows 12.5% actually stores 0.125. Typing 12.5 into a plain cell and then formatting it as a percentage gives 1250%.
Probability: a 30% chance is a probability of 0.3.
Frequently asked questions
How do you convert a percent to a decimal?
Divide the percentage by 100, which is the same as moving the decimal point two places to the left. For example 45% = 45 ÷ 100 = 0.45, and 7% = 0.07.
What is 12.5% as a decimal?
12.5% = 12.5 ÷ 100 = 0.125. As a fraction it is 125/1000, which simplifies to 1/8.
How do I convert a percentage smaller than 1% to a decimal?
Still divide by 100, adding zeros in front as needed: 0.5% = 0.005 and 0.25% = 0.0025. A common mistake is writing 0.5% as 0.5, which is actually 50%.
What about percentages over 100%?
They become decimals greater than 1: 150% = 1.5 and 250% = 2.5. A value of 1 means the whole amount, so 150% is one and a half times the amount.
Why do I need to convert an interest rate to a decimal?
Formulas such as simple interest (I = P × r × t) and compound interest use the rate as a decimal. A 6.5% rate must be entered as 0.065, otherwise the result is 100 times too large.
What is 33 1/3% as a decimal?
33 1/3% = (100/3) ÷ 100 = 1/3 = 0.333…, a repeating decimal written 0.(3) or with a bar over the 3. Typing 33.33% instead gives the rounded value 0.3333.
