How USD/CAD works
The Canadian dollar is quoted as USD/CAD: the number of Canadian dollars one US dollar buys. Converting from US to Canadian dollars is a multiplication:
CAD = USD × USD/CAD. At 1.3800, US$65 = 65 × 1.38 = C$89.70. When the rate rises, the US dollar is getting stronger and the loonie weaker.
Canada is a major oil and commodity exporter, so the loonie often moves with energy prices and with interest-rate differences between the Bank of Canada and the US Federal Reserve. Rates here are the European Central Bank's daily reference rates, a neutral mid-market benchmark.
Canadian cash and the 5-cent rounding rule
Canada stopped distributing the penny in 2013. Card payments are charged to the exact cent, but cash totals are rounded to the nearest 5 cents:

Tips for Americans spending in Canada
Prices say "$" but mean Canadian dollars. Convert before comparing with US prices, and add provincial sales tax.
Gas is sold by the liter, so a pump price in C$ per liter needs converting both for currency and volume (1 US gallon = 3.785 liters).
Avoid the "at par" trap. Some shops take US cash one-for-one or at their own rate; check it against the rate shown here.
Pay in CAD when a card terminal asks, to avoid dynamic currency conversion.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert US dollars to Canadian dollars?
Multiply the US amount by the USD/CAD rate: Canadian dollars = US dollars × rate. At 1.38, US$100 = C$138.
Why is USD/CAD quoted with the US dollar first?
Unlike the euro and pound, which are quoted as dollars per unit, the Canadian dollar is quoted as Canadian dollars per one US dollar. So this page’s main rate is the number you see on Canadian bank and news sites.
Where does the rate come from?
It is the daily reference rate published by the European Central Bank, delivered by the free Frankfurter API. The Bank of Canada publishes its own daily average rate, which is usually very close.
Should I use US cash in Canada?
Some stores near the border and in tourist areas accept US cash, but they set their own exchange rate and give change in Canadian dollars. Paying by card in Canadian dollars or withdrawing local cash usually works out better.
Why is the Canadian dollar called the loonie?
The Canadian one-dollar coin, introduced in 1987, shows a common loon. The coin and then the currency itself became known as the loonie; the two-dollar coin is the toonie.
Do Canadian prices include sales tax?
No. Like US prices, Canadian price tags usually exclude GST/HST and provincial sales tax, which add roughly 5% to 15% at checkout depending on the province.
