How the USD to JPY conversion works
The converter multiplies dollars by the exchange rate (yen per dollar) and divides to go back:
JPY = USD × rate and USD = JPY ÷ rate
The rate is the ECB euro reference rate cross: USD/JPY = (EUR/JPY) ÷ (EUR/USD), which Frankfurter calculates for you. Because Japanese prices are whole yen, the yen side is rounded to ¥1. If you add a markup, the amount you receive is USD × rate × (1 − markup %).

Tips for paying in yen
Pay in yen, not dollars. If a card terminal or ATM in Japan offers to charge you in USD ("dynamic currency conversion"), decline it; the conversion rate is usually worse than your card's.
Cash is still common at small shops, shrines and rural restaurants, so carry some yen. 7-Eleven, Japan Post and many convenience store ATMs accept foreign cards.
Tipping is not customary in Japan, so the price you convert is usually the price you pay. Consumption tax (10%, 8% for food to go) is normally already included in displayed prices.
Quick mental math: at around 150 yen per dollar, ¥1,000 is a little under $7 and ¥10,000 is a little under $70.
Frequently asked questions
Where does the USD to JPY rate come from?
The converter loads the daily euro foreign exchange reference rates published by the European Central Bank through the free, open-source Frankfurter API. The ECB publishes them around 16:00 CET on working days, so the rate is a daily mid-market reference, not a live trading price.
Why is the rate at my bank or airport different?
Banks, card networks and exchange counters add a margin to the mid-market rate. Airport kiosks can charge 5–10% or more, while many debit and credit cards charge 0–3%. Enter that percentage in the markup box to see the difference.
How many yen is 100 dollars?
Multiply by the current rate. At 1 USD = 150 JPY, $100 is ¥15,000. The converter shows the exact figure for today's ECB rate, plus a table of common amounts.
Why are yen shown without decimals?
The yen has no smaller unit in everyday use: the sen and rin were taken out of circulation in 1953. Prices, cash and most bank amounts are whole yen, so results are rounded to whole yen.
What is a man (万) in yen?
Japanese counts large numbers in units of 10,000 (man, 万) rather than thousands. ¥50,000 is 5 man-en, and ¥1,000,000 is 100 man-en. One oku (億) is 100,000,000 yen.
Does the converter work offline?
Yes. It remembers the last rate it loaded on your device; if it has never been online it uses a built-in approximate rate and says so. You can always type your own rate.
Is this financial advice?
No. Rates are informational reference rates and can differ from what you can trade at. Check with your bank or broker before making a transaction.
