Type a number with a unit such as 2.5 billion or 750 million and see it written out in full, in every other unit, in scientific notation and in words. Switch to the long scale if your source uses the European meaning of billion.

How to use the Million Billion Trillion Converter
Type the number, decimals allowed (e.g. 2.5).
Pick the unit it is given in: million, billion, trillion…
Choose the scale. Leave Short scale for US and modern English sources; pick Long scale for older British or European texts where a billion is a million million.
Read the full number, the short and long scale names, scientific notation and the words.
Check the table to see the value in thousands, millions, billions and trillions at once.
Short scale vs long scale
Large-number names come from Latin prefixes (bi = 2, tri = 3, quadri = 4 …), but there are two systems for what they mean. The short scale, used in the US and today in all major English-speaking countries, adds three zeros per name: n-illion = 103n+3. The long scale, still standard in French, German, Spanish, Italian and many other languages, adds six zeros per name: n-illion = 106n, with "-illiard" words (milliard, billiard) filling the gaps.

Converting between thousands, millions, billions and trillions
Bigger unit to smaller: multiply by 1,000 per step. 3.2 trillion = 3,200 billion = 3,200,000 million.
Smaller unit to bigger: divide by 1,000 per step. 450,000 thousand = 450 million = 0.45 billion.
Writing it out: move the decimal point three places right per step and fill with zeros: 2.5 billion → 2,500,000,000.
Tips for reading big numbers
When translating a European text, "milliard" or "Milliarde" means a US billion, and "billion/Billion" in German or French means a US trillion.
Older British books (before the 1970s) may use billion for 10¹². Check the date and context.
In finance, "MM" often means million (from Roman M = 1,000), so $5MM = $5,000,000, while "B" or "bn" means billion.
For very large values, scientific notation (2.5 × 10⁹) avoids any naming confusion.
Frequently asked questions
How many millions are in a billion?
On the short scale used in the US and modern English, one billion is 1,000 million (1,000,000,000 = 10⁹). On the long scale, a billion is 1,000,000 million (10¹²).
How many zeros are in a billion and a trillion?
A billion (short scale) has 9 zeros: 1,000,000,000. A trillion has 12 zeros: 1,000,000,000,000. A quadrillion has 15 and a quintillion 18.
What is the difference between the short and long scale?
On the short scale every new name is 1,000 times the previous one (million, billion = 10⁹, trillion = 10¹²). On the long scale every new -illion is a million times larger (billion = 10¹², trillion = 10¹⁸), with -illiard names such as milliard (10⁹) in between.
Which countries use the long scale?
Many countries in continental Europe and Latin America, such as France, Germany, Spain and Italy, use the long scale in their own languages. The United States, the UK (since 1974 officially) and most English-language media use the short scale.
How do I convert billions to millions?
Multiply by 1,000. For example, 2.5 billion = 2,500 million. To go from millions to billions, divide by 1,000: 750 million = 0.75 billion.
How much is a billion in lakh and crore?
One billion (10⁹) is 100 crore or 10,000 lakh. One crore is 10 million and one lakh is 100,000. The converter shows the Indian digit grouping (1,00,00,00,000) as well.
What does 2.5B or $3T mean?
B and T are short-scale abbreviations in finance and news: 2.5B is 2.5 billion = 2,500,000,000, and $3T is 3 trillion dollars = $3,000,000,000,000. K means thousand and M means million (in finance MM is also used for million).
