How to change a decimal into a percent
A percent is a number out of 100, so to write a decimal as a percentage you scale it up by 100:
percent = decimal × 100
In practice you move the decimal point two places to the right and add "%". If you run out of digits, add zeros: 0.3 → 30%, 4 → 400%. If digits remain after the point, they stay: 0.0375 → 3.75%.
Start with the decimal: 0.0825.
Multiply by 100 (move the point two places right): 8.25.
Add the percent sign: 8.25%.
Round only at the end if you need to: 8.3% to one decimal place, 8% to the nearest whole percent.

Common mistakes to avoid
Moving the point the wrong way. 0.06 is 6%, not 0.0006%. Converting a decimal to a percent always makes the number bigger.
Dropping zeros. 0.5 is 50%, while 0.05 is 5% and 0.005 is 0.5%.
Rounding too early. 0.6667 rounded to 0.67 first gives 67%, but the exact 2/3 is 66.67%. Keep full precision until the last step.
Converting twice. A test score of 0.92 is 92%; a value that already says 92% should not be multiplied by 100 again.
Frequently asked questions
How do you convert a decimal to a percent?
Multiply the decimal by 100 and add the % sign. This moves the decimal point two places to the right: 0.45 × 100 = 45%, and 0.07 × 100 = 7%.
What is 0.125 as a percent?
0.125 × 100 = 12.5%. It is also the fraction 1/8.
How do I convert a decimal greater than 1 to a percent?
The same way. 1.5 × 100 = 150% and 2 × 100 = 200%. Any decimal above 1 is more than 100% of the whole.
How should I round a percentage?
Round after multiplying by 100, not before. 2/3 = 0.6666… becomes 66.666…%, which is 67% to the nearest whole percent, 66.7% to one decimal place and 66.67% to two.
What is 0.005 as a percent?
0.005 × 100 = 0.5%, which is half of one percent. Very small decimals give percentages below 1%, so keep the leading zero: 0.5%, not 5%.
Why does my spreadsheet show 0.45 as 45%?
Spreadsheets store percentages as decimals. Formatting a cell that contains 0.45 as a percentage displays 45% without changing the stored value. If a cell contains 45 and you format it as a percentage, it shows 4500%.
