Convert GPS latitude and longitude (WGS84) into UTM coordinates: zone, latitude band, hemisphere, easting and northing in metres. Type one point in decimal degrees or degrees-minutes-seconds, or paste a whole list for batch conversion with CSV export.

Mode
Decimal degrees, DMS or DDM. South = negative or S.
West = negative or W.
Latitude first, then longitude, separated by a comma, semicolon or tab. An optional label can come first (label, lat, lon).
Leave empty for the standard zone, or enter 1–60 to project into a neighbouring zone.
Enter your values to see the result.

How to use the Lat Long to UTM Converter
Enter latitude and longitude in decimal degrees (40.7488, -73.9854) or DMS (40°44′55.7″N, 73°59′7.5″W).
Leave the zone empty for the standard zone, or force one if your project uses a single zone.
Choose decimal places for the metres (2 = centimetres).
Press Convert to UTM to get the zone, easting and northing, and open the map preview to check the spot.
For many points, switch to Batch, paste one lat, lon pair per line and download the CSV.
How lat long to UTM conversion works
Pick the zone.zone = floor((longitude + 180) ÷ 6) + 1. Each zone's central meridian is zone × 6 − 183 degrees.
Project the point with a transverse Mercator projection on the WGS84 ellipsoid (semi-major axis 6,378,137 m, flattening 1/298.257223563), centred on that meridian, with a scale factor of 0.9996.
Add the false origins. Easting gets +500,000 m. In the southern hemisphere northing gets +10,000,000 m.
Example: the Empire State Building at 40.748817, −73.985428 is in zone floor((−73.985 + 180) ÷ 6) + 1 = 18, central meridian −75°. Projected, it is 18T 585,650.84 E, 4,511,369.00 N.

Tips for working with UTM
Keep a project in one zone. Distances and areas are only easy to compute when all points share a zone. If your area straddles a boundary, force the zone that covers most of it; the projection stays accurate a few degrees beyond the edge.
Check the datum. Results are WGS84, which matches GPS and is within about a metre of NAD83 in North America. Older maps on NAD27 or other local datums can differ by tens to hundreds of metres.
Grid north is not true north. The grid convergence shown with each result is the angle you need to correct compass or survey bearings between the two.
Precision: UTM is in metres, so whole numbers already give about 1 m precision; 2 decimals is centimetre level.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert latitude and longitude to UTM?
Find the zone from the longitude, zone = floor((longitude + 180) ÷ 6) + 1, then project the point with the transverse Mercator projection centred on that zone's meridian, scaled by 0.9996, adding a 500,000 m false easting (and 10,000,000 m false northing in the southern hemisphere). This tool does all of that on the WGS84 ellipsoid.
What UTM zone am I in?
Zones are 6° of longitude wide, numbered 1 to 60 eastward from 180°W. For example, New York (−74°) is zone 18 and London (0°) is zone 30 or 31. Exceptions: southwest Norway uses zone 32V and Svalbard uses zones 31X, 33X, 35X and 37X.
What do easting and northing mean?
Easting is the distance in metres east of a line 500,000 m west of the zone's central meridian, so it is always positive. Northing is the distance north of the equator; in the southern hemisphere 10,000,000 m is added so values stay positive.
What is the letter after the zone number?
It is the latitude band, an 8° strip from C (80°S) to X (72–84°N), skipping I and O. Bands C to M are south of the equator and N to X are north. Some software instead writes N or S for the hemisphere, so 18N can mean either; check which convention your data uses.
Can I enter coordinates in degrees, minutes and seconds?
Yes. Enter values like 40°44′55.7″N or 40 44 55.7 N, or degrees and decimal minutes like 40 44.928 N. Use a minus sign or S and W for south latitudes and west longitudes.
Why can't I convert the North or South Pole?
UTM is defined only from 80°S to 84°N. Polar regions use the Universal Polar Stereographic (UPS) system instead.
How accurate is this conversion?
The tool uses the Krüger series for the transverse Mercator projection on WGS84, which is accurate to well under a millimetre within a zone. The overall accuracy is limited by your input coordinates: six decimal places of a degree is about 11 cm.
Are all the tools on FreeToolCabin tested for quality and accuracy?
Yes! Every tool on our site undergoes automated Q/A testing in real browser environments to ensure high precision, correct output, and zero errors. If you happen to spot a bug or have a suggestion, please contact us at [email protected] and our team will review it right away.
