How dollars convert to pesos
The pair is quoted as USD/MXN: Mexican pesos per one US dollar. Converting is a multiplication:
pesos = dollars × USD/MXN. At 18.50, $40 = 40 × 18.5 = MX$740. Because the rate is a large number, small changes matter: a move from 18.50 to 18.70 adds MX$20 for every $100.
The rate here is the European Central Bank's daily reference rate for the dollar and peso, delivered by the Frankfurter API. Exchange booths (casas de cambio) post separate buy and sell rates; the gap between those and this reference is their margin.
Mexican money
The peso is divided into 100 centavos. You will mainly see these coins and Banco de México notes:
| Type | Denominations | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Coins | 50 centavos, $1, $2, $5, $10, $20 | Coins are handy for tips, tolls and small purchases |
| Notes | $20, $50, $100, $200, $500, $1,000 | Large notes can be hard to change in small shops and taxis |
Tips for Americans spending in Mexico
- Read $ as pesos. When a price looks surprisingly high, it is almost always in pesos. Convert with the swap button to check.
- Use bank ATMs, ideally inside a bank branch, and decline the ATM's offer to convert for you so your own bank does the conversion.
- Compare exchange booths by typing their posted rate into the custom rate field; rates at airports are often far from the reference rate.
- Tip in pesos. Around 10–15% is common in restaurants; carrying small notes and coins makes it easy.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert dollars to Mexican pesos?
Multiply the dollar amount by the USD/MXN rate. At 18.50, $100 × 18.50 = MX$1,850. To go from pesos to dollars, divide pesos by the same rate.
Why do Mexican prices use the $ sign?
The peso uses the same $ symbol as the dollar. In Mexico, $ normally means pesos; MX$ or MXN is used when both currencies could be meant. A menu price of $250 is about 250 pesos, not 250 dollars.
Is it better to pay in dollars or pesos in Mexico?
Pesos, in most cases. Businesses in tourist areas that accept dollars set their own rate, which is usually well below the reference rate. Paying by card in pesos or with pesos from a bank ATM is normally cheaper.
What is the Banxico FIX rate?
Banco de México publishes a daily FIX exchange rate, used to settle US dollar obligations payable in Mexico. It is close to the market rate shown here, which comes from the European Central Bank’s daily reference rates.
How do I compare money transfer services to Mexico?
Look at the total pesos received, not just the fee. Enter the rate each service offers in the custom rate field, then subtract its fee, to see which delivers the most pesos for the same dollars.
Why does the peso move so much?
The peso is one of the most traded emerging-market currencies and reacts to interest rates in Mexico and the US, trade news, oil prices and global risk sentiment, so daily moves of 1% or more are not unusual.
