How Chinese size codes work

Chinese clothing labels follow the national standard GB/T 1335. The code height / chest type (tops) or height / waist type (bottoms) describes the body the garment is cut for, in centimeters:

Sizes step by 5 cm in height and 4 cm in chest or bust. Letter sizes vary between brands, so the numbers in the code are the reliable part.

Tips for ordering from Asian online stores

  • Find the chart on the listing. Marketplace sellers often post a chart with garment measurements (laid flat or all-round). Compare it with a similar garment you own rather than with your body.
  • "Flat" means half. A chest of 50 cm "flat" is 100 cm all round.
  • Check length and sleeves. Many Asian cuts are shorter in the body and sleeves; if you are tall, size up or look for the length measurement.
  • Read reviews for fit. Comments like "runs small" or buyers' height and weight are a useful reality check.

Are Asian sizes smaller than US sizes?

Yes. Asian letter sizes usually run one to two sizes smaller than US sizes. A men's Asian XL (180/96A) is made for a 96 cm (about 38 in) chest, which is a US medium. Women's Asian L (165/88A) fits about a US 6, a small.

What does 175/92A mean on Chinese clothing?

It follows the Chinese GB/T 1335 standard: the garment fits a person about 175 cm tall with a 92 cm chest (or bust for women). The letter is the body type from the chest–waist difference: Y slim, A regular, B fuller and C full waist. For trousers the second number is the waist.

How do I convert Chinese sizes to US sizes?

Use the chest number in the code (or the seller's chest measurement) rather than the letter. Convert it to inches by dividing by 2.54 and match it to the US chart: men's 96 cm ≈ 38 in ≈ US M; women's 88 cm bust ≈ US 6.

What is a men's Asian XL in US size?

A men's Asian XL is usually 180/96A, for a 96 cm (37.8 in) chest. That is roughly a US medium, US/UK chest size 38 or EU 48. If you wear a US L, look for an Asian 2XL or 3XL.

How do Japanese and Korean sizes compare?

Japanese men's sizes are S, M, L, LL (XL) and 3L, with M fitting an 88–96 cm chest. Japanese women's dress sizes use 号 numbers where 9号 fits an 83 cm bust. Korean men's sizes are the chest in cm (95 = M, 100 = L) and Korean women's sizes 44, 55, 66, 77 roughly mean XS to L.

Should I use body measurements or garment measurements?

Size codes like 175/92A describe the body the garment is made for. Many marketplace listings instead give flat garment measurements, which include ease. If the chart says 'garment chest 104 cm', it fits a body chest of roughly 92–98 cm for a regular fit.
