How to use the Men's Suit Size Converter
Choose a starting point: your measurements, or a size from a label.
Measure your chest around the fullest part, under the arms and over a shirt, and enter your height.
Add your waist (optional) to see your drop and which cut suits you.
Or enter a label: pick US/UK, EU or Italian, type the number and choose the length.
Read your sizes in every system and use the chart below to compare neighbouring sizes.
How to measure for a suit
Chest: wear a dress shirt, relax your arms and wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, under the armpits and across the shoulder blades. Keep it level and snug but not tight. This number in inches is your jacket size.
Height: stand barefoot against a wall. Height decides the jacket length and sleeve: Short, Regular, Long or Extra long.
Waist: measure where you wear your trousers, usually just above the hip bones. Subtract it from your jacket size to get your drop.
Measure your body, not a jacket. A jacket's own chest measurement is several inches larger than its size label because of the room needed for movement.

The rules behind the chart: EU/IT = US/UK + 10; German-style short sizes are half the regular number and long sizes are double the regular number plus two. Brands, especially slim Italian cuts, can run small, so check each maker's own chart when you are between sizes.

Understanding drop
Drop is the gap between jacket size and trouser waist, in inches. Suits sold as a set use a fixed drop, so it pays to know yours:
Drop 6 (classic): 40R jacket with 34 trousers. The most common off-the-rack cut.
Drop 7–8 (slim / athletic): 40R with 32–33 trousers, for broad shoulders and a trim waist.
Drop 4 or less (relaxed / portly): 44R with 40 trousers, for a fuller midsection.
If your drop doesn't match the suit, look for separates (jacket and trousers sold individually) or plan on tailoring the trousers.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my suit size?
Measure your chest at its fullest point, under the arms, over a dress shirt. That measurement in inches is your US/UK jacket size (rounded to the nearest even number), so a 40-inch chest wears a 40. Your height sets the length: Short, Regular or Long.
What is a 40R suit in European size?
A US/UK 40R is a European 50 and an Italian 50. In German short sizing it is a 25, and in long sizing a 102.
How do EU and US suit sizes compare?
For regular lengths, add 10 to the US/UK size to get the EU size: 38 becomes 48, 42 becomes 52. Italian sizes follow the same numbers.
What do S, R and L mean on suits?
They describe jacket and sleeve length for your height. As a guide, Short fits about 5′4″ to 5′7″, Regular 5′8″ to 5′11″, Long 6′0″ to 6′3″ and Extra long 6′4″ and taller.
What is suit drop?
Drop is the difference in inches between the jacket size and the trouser waist. A standard drop is 6 (a 40 jacket with 34 trousers); a drop of 7 or 8 suits an athletic build with a slimmer waist.
What do EU suit sizes like 25 or 102 mean?
German-style labels build the length into the number. Short sizes are half the regular size (25 = 50 short) and long sizes are double plus two (102 = 50 long).
Is my suit size the same as my chest measurement?
Usually yes for the body measurement over a shirt. Don't measure a jacket you own; its chest is wider than the size number to allow for movement.
